Hi
When Jef put the users manuals up on the web page, I printed
them out but I regret that I didn't save the files.
Did anyone save these files?

Uploads failed because all the files except the Reference Card exceed the
the 10MB upload limit, even in zipped form. Got an ftp account?

Hi Jack
Don't bother with the technical manual of the tforth manual. These
are already
on Al's web site. It is mirrored so I don't worry about them.
The other three are the ones that we don't seem to have.

Hi Jack
You could always send them to a drop box like drop.io.
My wife has Acrobat tools and can split the files into
smaller chunks.

I downloaded the tech manuals yesterday. They took a while due to the
PDF inflation but the hotel where I am staying at least has reasonable
internet speeds. Thanks again Al for your work to make the PDFs in
the first place!

I still suspect I have more of the IAI documentation around in text
form but just need time to find, reconnect, and hope old hard disks
work. (-:

Hi
I have a delema. I've played with the Acrobat tool for some
time but don't seem to be able to get anywhere with it.
I wanted to decimate the file to a smaller size but the tool
just doesn't want to do it ( although it does say it can be done
if importing from a ps file. I tried that and it crashed.
I believe I can split the file into a number of smaller
pieces and then post them or I can upload it to a file
sharing site like data.io.
What do people sugest?

Dwight/Al,

Can the Cat manuals be hosted at bitsavers? I'll be glad to send the pdf's I
downloaded from Jef's site when they were still available. Since they were
already published on the web once, is there any copyright issue?

my guess is that your PDFs are generated from image scans, so you'll need to
tell the software to rerez the images to a lower quality, and compress them
as well (they may have been scanned as TIFs).

there is an option, depending on your version, under the Document menu
called Optimize Scanned PDF, which allows you to clean up the scans and
essentially shrink the size of the images. start there and play.

then, under Advanced, there is a PDF Optimizer. the Images section is going
to be your friend. for starters, change all the resolutions to 72 or 100
and see how the quality turns out, then adjust up from there till you get
something reasonable but small.

finally, under the menu choice Document, there is an option for Reduce File
Size. It'll ask you what version you want to to make it compatible with (5
or 6 should be fine). older = smaller.

hope that helps. if you don't have those options, contact me and i'll get a
file from you and play with them. if i have any luck, then i'll do the rest
as well.

I don't understand why the pdfs that Jef put on his site can't just be
hosted in their 'original' form, i.e. left binary accurate to what was
on Jef's site. Is the problem hosting size? Can't they be hosted
somewhere OTHER than google groups (with its 20mb limit) or broken into
a multipart archive?

I apologize for the tone of that last message, I didn't realize how
demanding and nasty it sounded until after I reread it when you
responded. Sorry!

Thanks for the follow up - no offense taken. I certainly agree that accurate preservation of this material - digital or otherwise - is a high priority. All the more reason to thank Al yet again for his work at bitsavers.

Hi Jonathan
It is OK. it is just that the files are so large ( 31+ MEGs each ).
The googles group limits individual files to 10 MEGs.
I don't think reducing them by a factor of 2 ( 4 times smaller )
would be too much loss in quality. This would get them
down to 8 or 9 MEGs that would be easy to handle.

The Internet Archive still has copies of Jef's site, but the PDFs
themselves returned a "data retrieval failure" when I tried to
download them. The individual page images (which I presume were
either from or made up the PDFs) are still there, though:

I did some digging in the CHM archive this morning, and found the
box of documentation that John Baumgarner donated, which has those
manuals, as well as the press kit and several other Cat/Swyft related
things. I'll see about getting the material rescanned.

In looking around the archive, I found one individual page that doesn't load but the rest if the 15 or so pages I looked at do load OK.  Thanks for the links Vitorio, it is nice to know about the archive!

I am pretty sure I have some paper copies of the Cat manual so perhaps a rescan is in order.  I will check when I am next at the storage facility.

Hi Al,

The CHM ... The one in Mtn. View?  I donated a lot of stuff, keyboards, swyft, manuals, prototype units, etc to that one.

If so, would it be useful to get together and make sure that the stuff I still have is at least duplicated there?

Yes, the artifacts from you are the ones I was talking about.

Duane Elvey was looking for keys to fix someones keyboard. Do you still have
the international ones that we decided not to accept?

I have to go to the storage facility and paw through it.  I am out of state and I can't get there until late June/early July.
