to Canon Cat
Hi all,

Does anyone here live in the UK, and have a Canon Cat they'd like to
sell? I've seen them appear on EBay extremely rarely, but they're
almost always in the USA rather than the UK, and I wouldn't trust that
the 'Cat would survive the flight to the UK.

I've seen some instructions re adapting a 'Cat to work on UK voltage,
and I also have a gadget from Maplin (sounds like our equivalent of
Radio Shack) that will provide the US 110V voltage here in the UK. The
mains frequency difference worries me though, as we run at 50hz in the
UK rather than 60hz in the USA. Does anyone know if this difference
will harm a 'Cat?

Many thanks in advance,
Nick.

I ordered a 'Cat from eBay, from US to Finland (Europe) some years ago and it arrived OK, was packed quite carefully. I think there is some risk but it is doable. You can e-mail the seller and ask for extra careful packing, probably won't cost much more?

I'm using my Cat with a voltage converter, i.e. 240V->120V but same 50Hz. Seems to work OK -- on the other hand I use it only for a few hours every month or so. I didn't want to open it to change the power supply voltage, but to fix the floppy drive I think I will need to open it, at the same time changing the coltage setting inside seems logical.

Yours,
Hannu

Thanks for your advice, I have some confidence that I can import one from abroad and I'll have a chance that it'll work here in the UK.

Best Regards,
Nick.

Nick,

Not sure if you've gone ahead and purchased a Cat from somewhere but in case you're still thinking, I've just imported a Cat from the US to the UK and am having no problems with the electrical supply. I use a 230 -> 110V converter and run the Cat off that. Regarding your concern about the 50/60Hz frequency difference, I note that the Cat documentation talks about the Cat being able to handle frequencies in the range of 48 - 60Hz.
