Suggestion for right click operation

It will be nice to be able to open links on a site to a new tab by
right-clicking. This way you can still concentrate on the page you're
currently reading while letting all those links you right-clicked to
be loaded in the new tabs in the background. There's an extension
called instaclick for firefox that works like this. I hope you
consider adding this feature on your update.

Regarding a global option to open offsite links in tabs: Okay, I'll add
that.

Regarding the issue on techmeme.com: I will look into it.

Regarding right-clicking: Do you mean you would like to be able to open a
link in a tab just by right-clicking the link, without using (or even
seeing) the context menu?

Disregard the right-clicking suggestion. I think the feature you just
added; off-sites open new tabs & on-sites current tabs work simple and
nice. I love the fact that you added the command key for mac that
reverse the function of the aforementioned feature. Very nice. Thanks

After experimenting more on the new feature you just added, I felt
that the right-clicking on link to new tab is justifiable (I missed
the way instaclick f*fox extension works). This way, the user has
complete control of when to have links opened in new tab. Right now
links, whether external or internal, has the some sort of control of
the user. Sometimes you want to open even an on-site links on a new
tab and you don't want to keep on checkin on the status bar whether or
not the link you're clicking is external or internal.

Should this feature be implemented, we'll lose the contextual menu by
default but we can invoke it by adding command or any other key with
the right click. What do you think Chul?

I will think about it. It's not a feature that I want to add without a lot of consideration.

Have you considered using a mouse with programmable buttons and assigning one of the buttons to Command-click? I have a Magic Mouse, and with BetterTouchTool I have assigned double-tap to Command-click. It works like a charm when I want to open a link in a new tab. What do you think of that?

Please do if you can. I can't even imagine the hard work on your end
to add new feature. I tried your command click suggestion on
steermouse app that I use and it worked. Although I lost my contextual
menu for I ran out of buttons on my mouse to assign it to.

I'm not certain what is being discussed about the right-click, but I'd like to chime in here.

If I left-click on a link that opens in a new tab, it will follow the rules set up in the prefs (ex., open to the left of the tab). This is fine.

If I right-click on a link that might otherwise open in the same tab, and I select "open link in a new tab", that link always opens to the far right of all links, no matter how the prefs are set. Could this behavior also be made to follow the prefs setting (for example, to open the new tab to the left of the current tab)?

Not easily. When you just click a link, LinkThing can capture that click and open the link the way you want. But when you right-click a link and select "Open Link In New Tab", LinkThing can't capture that menu selection. Safari's extensions API doesn't provide a way to do so.

In that case, to force the tab to open next to the current tab, LinkThing would have to watch for new tabs and somehow figure out where they should go, after they open. I tried it, and the results were not pleasing because you would see the new tab at the end of the tab bar for a brief instant before it moved to the desired position.

So I would just ask you to not use the context menu command to open a link in a new tab if you can help it. I am working on an option to open links in new tabs when you right-click them without any modifier keys; perhaps that will help.

Hi Yoha,

It is accomplished. In LinkThing 1.0.8, you can now right-click a link to
open it in a new tab (or to open it in the current tab if opening link in
new tabs by default). You will find the option in the preferences window.
