I'm a marathon runner in the USA (Texas). I train with my dog,
Dexter, who is a 40 pound Lab-Dachshund mix; approx. 4-5 yrs old
(rescue dog). Dexter does all my training runs with me & builds up
mileage as I do. He has run up to 20 miles with me on several
occasions.
I'm trying to find some longer-distance events in the states.
Everything seems to be 3-5 miles, tops, which, for Dexter, is his warm-
up (unless it's extremely hot).
Most "human" marathons don't allow dogs to run with their owners, due
to concern for the dogs (& mistrust of owners).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Karine
Maybe the solution for you would be to start a canicross club in your
area and then start organising your own races. It's rubbish to suggest
a marathon is too much for a dog. My two little short-legged terriers
and I used until recently to do a 30-mile run every Sunday. As long
as they are fit and used to hard exercise, distance is no problem for
a dog. The only exception is hot weather. Dogs cannot cope with heat.
