There is no WebTV here so I do not know what it supports.
I doubt it does Java. You might be able to telnet to #coro_street
(not the - as in the title).
The below is what I send by e-mail.
Here is the latest update of #coro_street Internet Relay Chat info/Revised

Below is revised #coro_street Internet Relay Chat information that I keep
updating after I posted my well received posting.
Please e-mail me your nick after you get on.

----- begin forwarded text -----
Original August 17, 1997 at 19:25:14 (EDT) Unofficial C S guesbook posting
revised.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a multi-user online chatting system,
(written by Jarkko Oikarinen of Finland in 1988) where
people meet on channels to talk in groups, or privately to other users
all around the world via the Internet. All servers are interconnected
and pass messages from user to user over the network. One server can be
connected to several other servers and up to hundreds of clients.
Several large and small IRC networks exist. You need a client program
(such as mIRC for Windows 3.x/95/98/NT or ircle or Snak for Macintosh)
to make the connection. There are other programs. I am only mentioning
the three most popular.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 3.x/Windows 95/Windows 98/Windows NT
For Windows 3.x/95/98/NT use your browser (Netscape Navigator/Communicator,
Microsoft Internet Explorer) to go to this URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
- http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/6000 for the mIRC Home Page
in California. Go to
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/6000/get.html
and follow the directions to download the correct version for you to use.
If you are running Windows 3.x download mirc541s.exe. For Windows 95/98/NT
download mirc541t.exe. For the best (usually) download transfer speed choose
the closest download address to where you live. The following steps
apply to Windows 3.11 since that is operating system that I use. Windows
95/98/NT should be similarily the same. Position your cursor over the
underlined link of your choice. Click your left mouse button on the link.
When you see the menu dialog box move your cursor to the Save Link
As...selection. Release the button. A Save As... dialog box comes up. Left
click the OK button (Save button in Windows 95) to save the file that you
are about to download to your C drive. A Saving Location dialog box comes
up to show the progress of your download. The download is finished when
you see 100% and Time Left goes to 00:00:00. From your Program Manager
left click the File Manager icon. Find the file that you just downloaded
and left double click it. The downloaded file is a self-extracting
executable. You need no other program. When you run it, the built-in
installer will guide you to install mIRC. To get Instructions for Net
Newbies and Download Dummies; Help with Downloading, Installing and Setup
of mIRC go to
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/6000/install.html
Print it out.
I usually use Macintosh but I went through the process that many
find so difficult. It only took me 10 minutes to download, install,
setup and get onto the #coro_street channel.
mIRC *WILL* keep on working after a month. Ignore any Registration warnings
if you choose not to pay the author the shareware fee.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Macintosh
Ircle
Go to the Official Ircle Home Page at
http://www.ircle.com (Delete old bookmark. This the URL as of Summer 1998)
Follow the links to download ircle3.0b10. This beta version does do
about 100 popups, similar to the 600 that mIRC introduced. The next
full version 3.0 (without the b) or using extensions might be more
compatible. One advantage is that using ircle you can be on 10 different
networks (Dalnet, Undernet, EFnet, Chatnet, IRCnet, Anothernet,
Newnet etc.) at the the same time to the one (Dalnet, say for #coro_street)
at a time for mIRC.
The one technical problem with Macintosh files downloaded from
the Net is that they cannot be executable (run when you click on it)
like the PC ones. Macintosh files are usually posted in one of two encoded
formats - MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx). A Mac user has to have
something like Stufflt Expander 4.5 (which is free) to decompress those
files before you can install them. You can not download Stufflt Expander as
an executable application. You have to get it from a Mac user, or a floppy
disk or CD from a book dealing with Macintosh. If all else fails, you can
order a copy on disk directly from Aladdin Systems, Inc. for a small
shipping and handling fee.
If you have a decoding utility go to
http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/expander_mac.html
to download either encoded versions of StuffIt Expander.
Download the MacBinary encoded version of the installer if you have a
MacBinary decoding utility (Anarchie, Fetch, MacBinary II, StuffIt Lite,
StuffIt Deluxe).
Download the BinHex encoded version of the installer if you have a
BinHex decoding utility (Anarchie, Fetch, BinHex 4.0, StuffIt Lite,
StuffIt Deluxe).
Go to http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/ircle_setup.html
for setup instructions with illustrations.
ircle *WILL STOP* working in a month unless you register or hack in
a number to defeat the timeout.
Type these in the three Ircle 3.0b10 registration code fields.
xxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxx
1519-1366-5803
No parenthesis or any other characters.
Exactly in the order as above. It will save you money.
I also set up ircle so that it can read out the text on the
screen as it appears. The best settings for me are -
Voice: Marvin, Speech rate: 120 words per minute, Pitch: 50
ircle even recognizes a :-) and says "smile".
(mIRC can not do this.)
After you have gained some experience with ircle you can add
colour art to your messages by using popups. William Velásquez
has written a graphical user interface to about 100 popups
with themes like weddings, flags, party, pets, Xmas etc.
Download the file from
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/1839/
After you have expanded the file install according to the Read Me file.
HipScript is a package of utility scripts that provides quiet
automation of mundane IRC tasks for users and channel ops.
Download it from http://members.aol.com/ratserv/
MacPack is a script suite that does over 60 different commands.
Download it from http://www.pasoftware.com/macpack/index.html
ShadowTech is another script suite that has too many features
to list here. It does add unique sounds to commands.
Download it from http://www.epix.net/~jogre/shadowtech/
There are three Ircle Mailing Lists. Send an e-mail message to:
<mailto:requ...@ircle.planit.com>
For discussions dedicated to scripting the Ircle IRC client for the Mac
OS, in the Body of the email message include (no quotes):
"subscribe ircle-scripting"
For a general Ircle discussion list, in the Body of the email message
include (no quotes):
"subscribe ircle-talk"
For a dedicated Ircle announcement list, in the Body of the email message
include (no quotes):
"subscribe ircle-announce"
Snak
If you use ircle you will see many mIRC colors and popups broken up into
stray numbers, letters and symbols on your monitor. The Danish
program Snak has an option to tick that will display mIRC colors
properly on a Macintosh monitor. Go to the Snak Home Page at
http://www.snak.com/index.html
Follow the links to download and install Snak 2.0b2.
Snak *WILL STOP* working in a month unless you register or hack in
a number to defeat the timeout.
Type these in the two registration code fields.
(They work for Snak 1.4b3 but maybe not Snak 2.0b2)
1AA53F1418FB55EO
I do not use Snak as my main IRC client since it does not
do file serve, popups or read out the screen text. Since the lacking
features are popular the author will probably add them in later versions.

AND DON'T FORGET IT !!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Whatever client you use the first time you run it you will have to
fill in some information (Full/Real Name, User Name/e-mail address,
Nickname) as well as the IRC server with which you want to connect. On
IRC you are known to others by a nickname (up to 9 characters, no spaces).
The Corrie channel is #coro_street on the Dalnet network.Note that the
underscore (_) is not a hyphen (-). There are currently 32 servers. Try
raptor.ab.ca.dal.net (Western Canada) first and farside.ab.ca.dal.net
second. Try one until you get on. Other servers might be preprogrammed
into the program. During prime time some will be busy. Some might have
delay/lag problems. Do *NOT* get confused with Undernet. It is another
network with different servers. Wait for the Welcome to... message
to complete after you have established the server connection.
Most commands start with a forward slash, the "/". A basic list will be in
the Help file or Help menu.
Type into the inputline window at the bottom of your screen.
To see if anyone is on the channel - Type /who #coro_street - Press Enter
key
To join the channel - Type /join #coro_street - Press Enter key
A new window for the #coro_street channel will appear.
After you join the channel type your message and press the Enter key.
Now everyone can see your message. There is a list of who is on.
This is usually on the right side of your screen.
Each client has shortcuts for the above and other common commamds. Less
typing. In the above I have tried to summarize information for both
platforms. I personally use Macintosh by choice.
The EFnet IRC Help Home Page is probably the most
comprehensive site on IRC. It is at http://www.irchelp.org
I suggest the (long) A Short IRC Primer at
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircprimer.html
On #coro_street I have met people from Canada, USA, UK, Australia, Cyprus,
Germany, New Zealand, Belgium, Croatia, Malaysia, Bahrain. Open 24 hours.
Remember the time differences. Some people only access the net from work
weekdays. In North America it is best to try afternoon to evening weekdays.
Morning on on weekends. When I find time on weekends I am on there as
sliderman.
#coro_street was founded by Greggy in 1996. The website is at
<http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/9231/>
Friday nights in Canada/USA is trivia night for an hour. Time at 5 pm
Pacific Standard/6 pm Mountain/7 pm Central/8 pm Eastern/9 pm Atlantic
/9:30 pm Nfld/1 am Sat. UK/2 am Sat. Germany/3 am Sat. Cyprus/4 am Sat.
Bahrain/10 am Sat. Queensland, Australia/1 pm Sat. New Zealand.
I might host an occassional Sat night/Sun am UK trivia session sometime.
A favorite time is Sunday after their 8 pm many UKers come on and discuss
the night's episode.
You have to have a PPP or SLIP connection to the Net through an
Internet Service Provider. PPP is better. A local area network (LAN)
connection to the Net at school or work will also work. Rogers Wave/@home
and ADSL will work. You may have set up problems you if you use an
commercial online service like America On Line, Compuserve, Prodigy,
Genie, Delphi.
Technically you can telnet from a Freenet/community network. Sometimes
telnetting from work might be your only access to #coro_street. The
network system adminstrator might/can put up a firewall to block you
access.
Since telnetting is the least used way I will not say anything more.
Two Corrie web sites <http://homepages.enterprise.net/annew/cs/csgb2.htm>,
<http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/9231/>
offer a Java link to IRC. In order to use the Java link you have to had
installed a Java version of Netscape Navigator/Communicator (3, 4
or 4.5) or Microsoft Internet Explorer (3 or 4 or 5). Your computer also has to
be able to run Java - Power PC Macintosh or Wintel running 32 bit
Windows 95/98 or NT. Java gives a taste of IRC. You see the text like
telnetting there. The Java link is only a few lines of code compared to
the thousands for an IRC client. The Java link can be unstable and suffer
lag badly.
Newbies can be killed (thrown off) by NickServ if they use a nick
currently being used for nick collide and/or if the nick is registered. A
bad experience for someone new. Some might not try IRC again. Try using an
unusual nick, or adding ^ or _ (the underscore) after your nick. An IRC
client is best because of the many features (sounds, color text, screen
text read out, download files, popups etc.) and shortcuts. If you do not
know how to download continue to use the link but expect problems. After
you get a client working there is no
need to go back to the Java link or have the link running at the same time.
You will confuse yourself and ChanServ (not to confused with NickServ.
They do different things) on the IRC network might kill you for cloning.
If you are killed try to rejoin.
