COMMENTARY:
NDP HAS LOTS IN STORE FOR GUN OWNERS – NONE OF IT GOOD

As the federal New Democratic Party gears up for its policy convention in
Montreal on April 12-14, the burning question on the Dippers' lips is this:
"Who are we?"

The NDP faithful have cooked up 143 pages of resolutions for discussion in
an effort to save Canada from itself. Nestled in that left-leaning
nanny-state wish-list are three resolutions no doubt designed to keep
everyone safe from those dreaded guns we keep reading about. How can an
entire political party be duped into believing gun control is somehow
connected with public safety?

Insomniacs can find the NDP wish list under discussion here:
http://xfer.ndp.ca/2013/Montreal2013/Mtl2013_Resolutions_EN.pdf

Here are some of the anti-gun policy items the NDP will examine:

"BE IT RESOLVED that the NPD call on the government of Canada to immediately
reclassify non-restricted military-style semi-automatic rifles as prohibited
weapons, as many of Canada’s police forces and coroners are requesting, with
a view to taking these weapons off the market and ensuring they remain
traceable to and in the possession of their owners at all times, despite the
abolition of the long gun registry.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the NPD call on the Government of Canada to
ensure that the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons,
Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines,
Ammunition and Projectiles be updated at least once yearly to include
new weapons on the market or those that have been superficially
altered to avoid a restrictive classification."

Yes, this is the same political party that loves to placate gun owners by
saying, "Oh no, we would never dream of taking your guns away." It seems
Fibber Mulcair's nose is growing way into the next area code.

Another couple of policy resolutions would immediately disband the Canadian
Firearms Advisory Committee and send those terrible firearms experts
packing.
They would be replaced with a brand new committee comprised of
"police, women’s organizations, hunters, rural and Aboriginal Canadians"
to discuss "how to improve gun laws to enhance public safety."

Here are some more goodies for responsible gun owners to await with bated
breath:

"BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the NDP demand that the Conservative government
respect the court injunction protecting the data in the Quebec gun registry,
and stop wasting taxpayer money by fighting against the creation of a
registry of non-restricted weapons in Quebec.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that New Democrats oppose the Conservative
government’s efforts to weaken mental health evaluations required to obtain
a gun license.

Of course, the NDP would decide how to improve legislation and when it is
appropriate to possess firearms. And, we'd love to know how the Conservative
government is trying "to weaken mental health evaluations
required to obtain a gun license." Apparently if you say
something often enough....... This too, is the same party that surgically
forced just the right number of M.P.s to flip-flop and scuttle Bill C-391,
regardless of their constituents' wishes.

If you are a responsible gun owner and you support the NDP, you need to ask
yourself a question similar to the one the NDP is about to ask itself. Look
in the mirror and repeat: "Who am I?"

COMMENTARY: IS IT NEWS WHEN BAD THINGS DON'T HAPPEN?

Some members of the Canadian media must have skipped their university class
on yellow journalism – take a look at the widespread reportage on the tragic
murder-suicide of two men in Gatineau QC on April 5.

Almost immediately, reporters learned there were no children endangered
during the shooting in a daycare setting. Yet days later, the media are
still exploiting follow-up stories about "the daycare shooting"
There is much fearful speculation about potential trauma for the 48
children at the daycare, although reports say there were five
toddlers under 18 months old who might have seen the shooting.

Other reports focus on the crippling fear that parents felt when they heard
the news. And thanks to breathless media reports, we know all about the Good
Samaritan next door who housed the children who were cold because they
vacated the building without their coats. Meanwhile, Gatineau police are
providing agency phone numbers for those in shock who need psychological
help.

If this same unfortunate incident had taken place in a library or bowling
alley, follow-up news stories would be buried on page 12. If the alleged
assailant had used a knife instead of a shotgun, there may not have
been a follow-up story at all. Could it be possible the media are now
poised to exploit stories that involve a gun and children in the wake
of Sandy Hook?

No child was harmed in Gatineau, yet the coverage continues three days
later. Not coincidentally, follow-up stories contain a lead with a new
detail or two, and then repeat the original story all over again. The media
seem to delight in reporting every firearms occurrence. The photo-op
has become old hat – now we have the "anti-gun-op."

There is an obvious problem with incessantly repeating the anti-gun-op.
Some media agencies are actually coaching the next shooter who lusts
for fame. The media loudly proclaim, "We don't make the news, we report it."
Yet they refuse to take the responsibility for teaching deranged
attention-seekers how to earn endless headlines.
To assure maximum coverage, a shooter's heinous plan should involve
heart-breaking touchstones like daycare, kindergarten, school, children,
innocent and helpless.

Anti-gun-op reportage gives the wrong ideas to the wrong people. And while
they would never admit it, the offending news agencies have little
incentive to stop because tragedy drives profit. The Sandy Hook
aftermath shows that the blame does not lie solely with the media.

Four months after that school shooting, shameless high-profile politicians
are still advancing their personal agendas by pushing the greiving parents
of murdered children in front of TV cameras.

There is one factoid that the media did not highlight in the Gatineau
shooting. It took place in Quebec, which is the only province that
retained a long-gun registry.
Thank heaven it works so well.

PETA PROVIDES TEMPTING TARGETS: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
is actively shopping for a drone that would "stalk hunters," the
organization said Monday.

The group says it will "soon have some impressive new weapons at
its disposal to combat those who gun down deer and doves" and
that it is "shopping for one or more drone aircraft with which to monitor
those who are out in the woods with death on their minds."

The group says it will not weaponize the drones, but will use them to
film potentially illegal hunting activity and turn it over to law
enforcement. "The talk is usually about drones being used as killing
machines, but PETA drones will be used to save lives,"PETA President Ingrid
E. Newkirk said in a statement. They are currently considering purchasing
the CineStar Octocopter, which is capable of carrying a DSLR camera for up
to 5 minutes. With smaller cameras, the drone can fly for about 20 minutes.

The group says it also hopes to fly drones over factory farms, fishing spots
and "other venues where animals routinely suffer and die."

In order to legally operate the drone, it will likely need a certificate of
authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration, a process which can
take several months. Kaitlynn Kelly, a representative for PETA, tells U.S.
News that they will soon seek FAA approval but that they "hope this won't be
an issue," and that they plan to have permission to fly beginning in the
fall. "We're not releasing the locations that we have in mind, but we will
look into the Northeast, bighorn sheep hunts and bowhunts because those are
Especially cruel," she says.
The group may want to carefully monitor its drone-last year, an animal
rights group drone was shot down while it was attempting to monitor pigeon
hunters in South Carolina. (U.S. News & World Report – April 8, 2013)

U.S. PREZ EXCELS AS GUN SALESMAN: During Barack Obama's presidency there
have been 32 background checks for gun purchases every minute. Since
February of 2009, the first full month of Obama's presidency, there have
been 70,291,049 background checks for gun purchases, according to data
released by the FBI.

Using February 1, 2009 as our starting date, and March 31, 2013 as our end
date, (the latest data from the FBI) Obama has been president for 1,520
days. That equates to 36,480 hours, or 2,188,800 minutes.

Divide the 70,291,049 background checks by 2,188,800 minutes and you get
approximately 32 checks for gun purchases every minute! See more "Right
Views, Right Now." (cnsnews.com -- April 9, 2013)

BIASED NEW YORK TIMES IS OBAMA'S SHILL IN ANTI-GUN CRUSADE: President Obama
came here (Hartford CT) on Monday before a roaring, enthusiastic crowd to
remember the tragedy of 20 children and 6 educators slain at Sandy Hook
Elementary School and put new pressure on a recalcitrant Congress to honor
them with gun-control legislation.

In an impassioned speech that at times took on the tone of a campaign rally,
Mr. Obama told an audience of 3,100 at the University of Hartford that he
came to Connecticut to ensure that the deaths in the school in Newtown would
not recede and to remind Americans how important their voice is as the gun
debates unfold.

“If you’re an American who wants to do something to prevent more families
from knowing the immeasurable anguish that these families here have known,
then we have to act,” Mr. Obama said. “Now’s the time to get engaged. Now’s
the time to get involved. Now’s the time to push back on fear and
frustration and misinformation. Now’s the time for everybody to make their
voices heard, from every statehouse to the corridors of Congress.”

But as Mr. Obama spoke, Republicans on Capitol Hill were threatening to
prevent a gun-control measure from even coming up for debate.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, announced Monday
that he would join at least 13 other Republicans who have vowed to block
consideration of gun legislation passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee
and assembled by the Democratic leadership. That effectively made the
threatened filibuster a test of Republican unity.

Mr. McConnell made his announcement as the Senate returned from recess and
the legislative struggle over new gun safety legislation entered a critical
phase. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, took steps to
force a vote to start a broad review of gun-control proposals and accused
those threatening a filibuster of “blatant obstruction,” even as they showed
no signs of backing down.

“Shame on them,” said Mr. Reid, a Democrat.

Mr. Obama spoke in Hartford less than a week after the Connecticut General
Assembly passed a sweeping package of gun and mental health legislation with
bipartisan support.

The president was introduced by Nicole Hockley, whose first-grade son,
Dylan, was killed at Sandy Hook. She recalled her life with her two sons
before the tragedy and said she no longer had the option of turning away
from the effects of gun violence. She said she was convinced that she
and others had approached Connecticut lawmakers with the “love and logic”
that persuaded them to pass the bill. She believed that approach could work
with Congress, she said. “If you want to protect your children, if you want
to avoid this loss, you will not turn away either,” Ms. Hockley said. “Do
something before our tragedy becomes your tragedy.” ...

After the speech, as the Newtown family members boarded Air Force One, one
mother wiped away tears and another held up a notebook. On it were written
two words: “Love Wins.” When the president’s plane landed at Joint Base
Andrews near Washington, Mr. Obama could be seen through its windows
gathered with the families. A White House official said he was telling them
where matters stood in Congress ahead of their lobbying this week.

Then they exited together, the president standing at the portal as each
passed to descend the Air Force One stairs. He returned to the White House
by helicopter; they were driven in government vans to Washington. (New
York Times – April 8, 2013)
