We have been having some issues with our vinyl windows. We regularly clean
and apply Pledge on the windows. It appears that where the window comes in
contact with the stainless steel frame, a rust-like stain appears on the
window. The stain appears to be imbedded into the window and cannot be
scrubbed off.

Two years ago, we replaced the windows and the stains have now started to
re-appear. We have started to use the plastic snap-on stand-offs to keep
the frame and the window apart, but on occasion, the stand-offs do get
dislodged and the windows again come in contact with the frame.

We are trying to determine if it is the hot frame in summer that is causing
the problem or is there something that is leaching from the frame itself.
If it is the latter, is there anything that can be done to remedy the
problem?

Thanks,
Sam

You don't say whether you're in fresh or salt water area. Contrary to what most
hink, stainless steel still rusts. There are different s/s alloys and some rust
more than others. For marine use 316 is usually recommended as being the most
rust resistant. Salt is a dessicant, it will draw moisture fromthe air. So, if
you get any salt water splashed on the metal (almost inevitable) and then the
plastic lies in contact with the metal, it's an ideal place for rust to occur
caused by the presence of both salt and mositure drawn from the air.
The only remedy is to keep the windows from touching the metal. A coating over
the metal, if you can find something of acceptable appearance that will stay on,
would be one option.

Sam,

You can buy plastic "stand-offs" for this. They just keep the vinyl from
touchign the Stainless. Stop using pledge if you want you windows to last
longer than a few seasons. Better product for protecting plastic windows is
303 protectant

A buddy of mine used a clear plastic hose.... split and wrapped around the
S/S frame where it made contact. Problem solved.

What on earth is 303 protectant and where can you find it?

Pat,

You can find it in any Marine Chandlery It's actually called "303 Aerospace
Protectant" It's specifically designed to protect plastic products like
vynil, lexan, rubber, etc. I've even bought it at Canadian Tire (in season!
which at CDN tire seems to mean the the boating season is from April to
July!)

Going on that idea, I expect that even putting 2 or 3 coats of clear lacquer
on the tubing where it rubs would do well too, but I wouldn't use varnish as
it will be yellowish, lacquer would be clear..

Yes that should work as well... but why buy a can of lacquer when tubing
will run you a couple of bucks.. tops.

Just looks, and in the case of one boat I owned, probably fit. One
particular boat had the 3 tubes close tight to each other when folded, vinyl
tubing would have made it difficult to close up on that one..

But just taking a simple workable idea and throwing out options..

True... a situation I hadn't considered. In such a case your method would be
superior.
