Just listening to the segment on the Senate expense account scandal.
Yes, Duffy should fry. Sounds like Wallin will be next into the
frying pan.

The whole issue got me thinking, especially in the context of only one
Member of Pariiament ever making her expense claims public.

I'm willing to bet Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau are only the tip of the
iceberg. Further, if a detailed audit was done of the expense
accounts of all Members of Parliament--both Senate and House of
Commons--we'd find a lot of rot. Further, I expect we'd find members
of all the major parties in Parliament--Conservitive, Liberal, NDP and
BQ--with their fingers in the cookie jar.

I think the best way to clean up the rot is to make it mandatory for
all Members of Parliament to (a) publish the details of their expense
accounts and (b) have their account audited *every* year.

Parliament has to come clean.

You mean run it like a business is required to run under Revenue Canada
rules for expenses? Heaven forbid our "ruling" class should be subject to
the rules us commoners are subject to.

It's time that all levels of government get dragged back down to earth, both
elected and the bureaucrats that continue to bleed the public purse dry

Independant auditors and oversight would be the order of the day,
independant especially from the PMO.

That should not be necessary. They are supposed to be people who can be
entrusted to pass legislation for the benefit of the people of the
country. If they are found to be thieves and liars they should be fired.
They are not to be trusted in Parliament or in the Senate. I worked
for a provincial ministry and had a provincial gas credit card. The
rules were quite simple. They were to be used only for fuel for ministry
vehicles, and ministry vehicles were for ministry used for ministry
business. One guy in our district got caught using his card to put some
gas in his personal vehicle. He was not given the chance to pay back the
money. Nor did someone upper management pay it back for him. He was
fired. If they can fire one of the lowest paid on the rung over $20
worth of gas, it seems appropriate that someone with a 6 figure income
who screwed the government out of $90,000 should face at least the same
penalty.

If Mr. Duffy and Mr Brazeau and (possibly) Ms. Wallin are any
indication, they can't be trusted with public funds without some kind
of independent oversight. The three mention are the ones who, so far,
have been caught. I'm willing to bet there are more where they came
from, and the only reason they have got away with it is because
government auditing (or lack thereof) is letting them fly under the
radar.

Absolutely!!

So far, three caught. How many more who have their fingers in the
cookie jar and haven't been caught?

It should become a legal requirement that all members of both houses
should have to post details of their expense accounts to the web for
public scrutiny. It may not be the perfect solution, but it would be
a step towards keeping them honest.

(And, doctor, given all the shenanigans around things like Adscam and
strippergate, I'd be really surprised if every Liberal member of
Parliament is squeaky clean.)

It's not so much as thievery re the NDP or Green, it's more a
matter of unfounded idealism, of little knowledge of economics,
international affairs, etc.. They are just plain NAÏVE with a
capital N. And they are totally, absolutely, out to lunch on

Considering the Greens have only ever elected one MP, the Greens are a
red herring.

Given the current expense account scandal is focused on members of the
Senate, and there has never to my knowledge been an NDP senator, that
too is a red herring.

I suspect that, if members of the HoC were audited with the same
rigour as the senators, a few NDP might get caught in the net along
with a few more Conservatives and Liberals.

Is that nym-shifting bimbo KKKaren still posting here?

Here you go bimbette:

In the 1991 provincial election, Harcourt led the NDP back to power,
defeating the Social Credit party led by Rita Johnston. This marked the
second time that the NDP had ever been in power in BC, and the first since
1975.

Harcourt resigned as premier in February 1996 as the result of "Bingogate",
a scandal in which an NDP member, David Stupich, used money raised by a
charity bingo to fund the party

The Green party stands in the wings wishing they could get at the trough but
currently they are kept out by the more senior parties but they too will get
there.

So you think they're "naive". That's your opinion, but hardly fact.

Do you admit that 'naivity' and 'thievery' are two very diverse
