OTTAWA -- The number of people collecting regular employment insurance
benefits fell 2.4% in August, with decreases occurring in nearly all
provinces, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
The decline of 19,100 claimants was the second consecutive monthly
reduction, having fallen 3.8% in July, the first decrease in 11 months.
On a yearly basis, however, the number of claimants stood at 763,200 in
August, up 52.5% from October 2008, the federal agency said.
