This isn't particularly cheap compared to extrusion 3D printers - an
Ultimaker would be around a third to a half this price - but it is
very cheap as stereolithography machines go. You should be able to
make a wider range of shapes with one of these. I'll be keeping an eye
on it.

The B9-Creator <http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/b9creations/b9creator-a-high-reso...> was kickstarted a few months back and has now shipped (putting it firmly in the reality category) - it's also a stereolithography printer, and is about the same price (but not as nicely designed). Resin seems cheaper, and it's (going to be) open source. Check out the updates tab on Kickstarter for sample prints and videos.
I'm waiting for someone to redesign it using Ultimaker style laser cut ply & acrylic so I can make one myself :-)
