Hello All,

I am pleased to announce the last meeting of the 2011-2012 calendar. Please join us at 7:30 pm on May 8th, 2012 in MCZ 101 for the club's 1143rd meeting. You are also welcome to join us for an informal dinner meeting at the Cambridge Commons restaurant at 1667 Massachusetts Avenue between Porter and Harvard Squares in Cambridge. We are moving our dinner to the restaurant due to reduced dinner service at the Caspersen Student Center. Club members should begin to arrive at Cambridge Commons around 6:00 and we all walk over to the MCZ about 20 minutes before the meeting. There is an announcement poster attached to this message on the Google groups page.

First, we will conduct elections for the 2012-2013 calendar. Please send nominations to me at jessis...@gmail.com before 4 pm on May 8th. The positions are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 2 Executive Committee members.  All nominees should be in attendance at the meeting and be able to attend all meetings in the following year.

I will be giving a talk titled:

“Bats vs. moths: an evolutionary arms race”

Bats and moths have been trapped in an evolutionary arms race for over 50 million years. Bats “see” the sensory world in sound and insects have evolved an array of tools to exploit echolocation to stay one wing beat ahead of bats. Moths have adapted ears and ultrasonic cries to avoid bats and jam bat sonar. I will focus on the adaptations of tiger moths to avoid bat predation and introduce a species of tiger moth that has co-opted its bat ears for sexual communication.

If you have a show and tell item or insect, please bring it to the meeting. I am looking forward to seeing you all next week.

Best,

Jessica
CEC President
