Council tax
ISTR that there has been a discussion here recently on the status for Council tax of Ph.D students beyond terms. We now have an instance of a fourth-year undergraduate (or rather her landlord) being told by the Council that fourth year *undergraduates* on bona fide four-year courses, not living in College, are no longer exempt from CT.... more »

Tesco putative East Road store has applied for an alcohol licence
I noticed this evening via a notice taped to the window of the former Dreams bedstore stating that Tesco have applied for an alcohol licence. It was too dark to note the details, perhaps someone else can do that in daylight. Judging by the number of dodgy characters around the East Road / Burleigh Street area, holding on to a can of... more »

What are the fruit growing on corner of Ross St and St. Philips Road?
Anyone know? Sorry, no photo, but I thought someone might already know. Look like a large round pear. Curious, as I've lived opposite for years, and always thought they were inedible, but recently people have been picking them. Cheers Ian

Recording of Casino Royale, anyone?
Ugh, I really hate it when they split films up on ITV and put the news in the middle. We were just watching Casino Royale which we taped on the PVR hard disc back on 19th September (yes, it's taken us a while to get round to it), only to discover that we actually only had half the bloody film. Has anybody kind soul got a video copy of the second half that we might... more »

Christmas with the Rat Pack - Sat 5 Dec 19:30
I have 2 tickets for 'Christmas with the Rat Pack' at Cambridge Corn Exchange on Saturday 5th December at 19:30 but now cannot make it. These are seats XG 11+12 in the middle of the tiered seating so very good seats. I believe that there are now only a few single seats left in the tiered seating for this performance i.e. no seats together.... more »

LHC up and running (again)
Since there's no cam.geeks... Looks like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is cycling up to operation again. There's a great portal at [link] to access CERN's (near) real-time experimental results. Current status is cryo OK; energy at 208 GeV (around 450GeV by the weekend); beam dumps set (so no collisions quite yet -- boo! b-- won't... more »

"Durability" under sale of goods act
My microwave has just died. I still have the receipt, I bought it from Comet in January 2008. According to [link] "If a product that was faulty at the time of sale is returned to the retailer, the buyer is legally entitled to ... a reasonable amount of compensation (or "damages") for up to six years from the date of sale"... more »
