Yes and yes. It's been bought by the couple who run the Carlton Arms, (also well
known before that for running the tombola at the Cambridge Beer Festival) so
expectations are pretty high.

Winnington who's now running the Waggon for Elgoods a few steps away
from here) so I was wondering if they may have decided to retain it as
an investment.
And on a related subject does anyone know if Jethro and his missus are
retaining the Carlton Arms too?

AIUI Terri and Jethro have bought Chris and Debbie's interest. The Blue
is being refurbished and should re-open shortly. I think the main loss
will be the rowing mementoes.
Chris was firm that we wasn't retiring, just concentrating on his rowing
coaching.

Last time I heard, they were going to open a new pub somewhere on the
railway station. Is that no longer going to happen? (Insert here my
standard rant about Cambridge no longer having a pub on or near the
railway station).

You'll remember that the left hand bar was smoking and the right
non-smoking in Nick's day. It lost some custom for the first couple of
weeks but my memory is that within no time it was even busier than
before (lots more students I seem to remember).

This is excellent; I don't want to lose the Carlton quality where I
live, and the Blue is quite close to work. Of course, so are the
Flying Pig and the LLL.

Are they getting rid of the boat club momentoes? I am in the X-Press boat
club and as far as I know we are still going to be affiliated with the Blue.
I could be wrong though.

AFAIK
Most the boat club momentoes were in the personal collection of Chris and he
has taken most (if not all) with him.
Some of momentoes were offered for sale. I think maybe Jethro has his own
collection of items to hang on the walls
with more of a 'beer' theme than boats!

I heard that they'd bought the freehold, but that's hearsay. Certainly the freehold
was on the market (it's been in the property pages of the Morning Advertiser for
at least a year), so I think Chris and Debbie were looking to cash in their chips
and get out of the game, but again that's speculation on my part.

As I understand it, pubs that were non-smoking before the ban were the only ones
to experience an increase in trade when the ban came in. Can't speak for the Blue
specifically though. Pubs that were not non-smoking have universally lost trade I
think, with those without gardens worst affected.

I think it's safe to say that no-one knows for sure. The latest information I
have (received today from Ian Kitching):

Of course, but most smokers would have chosen a smoking pub in preference, and
would presumably have some particular reason for being in a non-smoking pub, such
as meeting a particular group of people who'd agreed on that venue. Now there's no
reason to prefer other pubs on those grounds, and indeed the Blue has one of the
larger beer gardens of pubs in the city, so it should prove extra-popular with smokers.

It is of course open to any landlord to decide not to permit smoking in
their garden should they so desire.
At the Carlton, before the ban, smoking was permitted and banned in various
parts of the pub following consultation with the punters. One can imagine a
landlord who might ban smoking in the garden if that's what most of the
punters wanted, or permit it if that's what most of the punters wanted.

What I meant was - on a warm day the garden at the Blue always was popular
with smokers anyway.

One can imagine it, but what would a landlord gain from that? The number
of pubgoing people who can't tolerate smoking going on in the open air
must be vanishingly small if the number who couldn't tolerate it inside wasn't
enough to balance the reduced numbers of smokers patronising pubs. I would
guess the Free Press still doesn't allow smoking in its tiny garden, but that's
as it was before the ban.

What a real shame - there are some gems in there, it is very weird to
walk into a pub and see a blade from your club, some 20 years before you
were born, hung up on the wall.

Having been abroad for three months and returned to a country of non-
smoking pubs, what has really struck me is that the pub gardens are
definitely less pleasant than they were, for that reason. Noy a huge
issue, but noticeable.

Many pubs now smell of BO and farts inside these days. I guess it's all a
question of what you can tolerate. The state of beer gardens presumably
won't be an issue for non-smokers for half the year (the half starting about
now). In any event, pubs probably can't really afford to lose the remaining
smokers, so it may be a question of whether you want there to be pubs at
all.

You are all right. We have bought the freehold from Chris and Debbie
some of the rowing memorabilia is still at The Blue and the rest Chris
and Debbie have taken with them or returned to the owner, some of it
was indeed sold to people that had happy memories and connections with
a particular item. All the money from the sale of items went to
charity in memory of Chris' brother Andrew.
We will be open for business tomorrow, Wed 17th Oct and we hope you
like what you find. There will be a greater selection of ales, beers
of the World and wine to choose from.
Food will be available from Friday as the kitchen is not yet fully up
and running.
We still have the lease at The Carlton Arms so the selection of ales
etc will still be available there too.
