Since there's no cam.geeks...

Looks like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is cycling up to operation
again. There's a great portal at
http://www.lhcportal.com/Portal/index.htm to access CERN's (near)
real-time experimental results.

Current status is cryo OK; energy at 208 GeV (around 450GeV by the
weekend); beam dumps set (so no collisions quite yet -- boo! b-- won't
happen for a couple of weeks yet); experiment handshakes under way.

They're looking at first full beams in the 12am-8am shift.

So the end of the world is not quite nigh then? ;-) [for viewers in N.I. I
don't mean now]

Well, it's not looking too good for the graphite blocks they're dumping
the beams into at the mo'... ;)

They're up to the full 450 GeV for the weekend's experiments now. Looks
like the first dump might have happened, if I'm interpreting "page 1"
correctly. Hmmm, they've just reset. Looks like it's time to try again.

I hear they're expecting to run most of the big experiments some time in
2012...

Well, they'll be running up to 5 TeV until the end of 2010, then
there'll be a brief intermission whilst everything's uprated to 7 TeV.

I'm a little confused, 'cos the energy's now up to 1.18 TeV, and they
had global beam permits a while ago, although not any more. I wonder if
they're trying to sneak a few higher-energy tests before the night shift
takes over? They're still using the dumps for now.

Presumably before the Olympics cause the end of the world?

Sorry, being a bit dim today, didn't catch the movie/Mayan reference.

Good news. When is the end of the world expected?

So that's OK, we have 104 years.
