Palin calls for special session
GAS LINE: Governor wants lawmakers to convene June 3.
By STEVE QUINN
The Associated Press

JUNEAU -- Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she will announce whether
TransCanada Corp.'s gas line bid will emerge as her administration's
recommendation by mid-May.

Palin said this does not necessarily mean TransCanada will be
recommended, although most in the Legislature believe it to be a
foregone conclusion.

The governor also called a special legislative session to begin June
3, a few weeks after the Legislature is to receive her
administration's report on the company's application.

TransCanada is proposing to anchor a 1,715-mile gas line in Arctic oil
fields on Alaska's North Slope, the bedrock for the state's robust oil
industry since the 1970s.

Natural gas would flow southeast to a pipeline hub in Calgary,
Alberta, then connect to the major markets on the continent.

About 35 trillion cubic feet of proved natural gas reserves are
believed to lie beneath the North Slope permafrost, and energy
analysts believe that figure will rise in the future.
