Anyone know of any evening entertainment in Calgary that's affordable by
non-oil company workers besides drinking, doing dope, and eating?

Endless things.

- Shakespeare in the Park, as someone else mentioned.
- The Folk festival is coming up next weekend. Not exactly cheap, but an
incredible bargain for the amount of music you get to hear and the variety
of artists.
- Movies of course. There are cheap theatres in a few places.
- Street fests all over. Cariwest, Marda Loop street fest, etc.
- Fishing. Hey, why not? We've got one of the best trout streams around!
- Cycling, walking, etc. through the river valley and through the ?event?
neighborhoods (Eau Claire, 17th Ave, Kensington).
- When the weather turns colder, go skating in Olympic Plaza.
- Pack a picnic. (Yeah, it's eating--but not another evening at Moxies!)
- Weed my garden (OK, that's probaby not too appealing for most)

Anyone else?

You got it backwards chick. You think drinking, doing dope and eating is
affordable? It's the oil company workers doing all the shit.

Heh heh. Keep the answers coming, folks. I'm trying to organize for a
group, always a couple of months in advance -- evening entertainment
preferably under $50, that won't be threatened by weather. Appreciate the
comments.

Hi Tracy;

How big of a group? And how old (i.e. kids, partying 20-somethings, or
actual grown-ups?) Depending on the crowd, going to the Glenbow might
be a cool evening. In fact, you might be able to rent it out for a
cocktail party of sorts for a decent rate. Not sure.

About 6 to 12 people, adults evening (possibly many different people) not
fancy cocktail things -- just regular monthly gatherings preferably in the
expense range of $25 each or so. Seems the only thing we've come up with
so far that won't fail in spite of weather, are eating and drinking.

Are you referring to the Glenbow Museum here? Is it interesting? I
haven't been there. It's not the sort of thing that ever comes up in
conversation it seems, anymore than Billy Boy's girlfriend baking apple pie.
I wish we had a really neat museum here like Madam Tusseaud's or
something -- or some kind of wild computer tech museum. Wouldn't that be
loads of fun? Heck, I'd settle for an affordable computer fair once a
year even. They had quite a few of those on the West Coast.

Yeah, the Glenbow is definitely a good museum--worth a visit definitely,
although I'm not sure that monthly visits would stay very exciting for a
group.

Some other ideas: There's the Telus World of Science. The Zoo has some
evening events now and then. For a regular gathering, you could get
together and play pool (or snooker).

It's still sorta in the "eating and drinking" realm, but heading out
to a concert once a month would be pretty cool. There's live music going
on every night in the city, and cover charges are pretty reasonable.

Something we used to do in University was have a rotating dinner party.
Every month the next person on the list would host the thing. You could
do the same with food, or with movies.
