We have some exciting news for everyone: as a natural step to provide a better testing solution to all mobile developers and teams, the San Francisco based mobile tech start-up Xamarin has acquired LessPainful, and hired Jonas and myself. Xamarin's main goal is to enable developers to write cross-platform mobile apps using C# in either Visual Studio or Xamarin Studio.

We're extremely excited to be joining the Xamarin team to drive the development of the Xamarin Test Cloud and further improving Calabash.

So, what does this mean for Calabash?

Only good things! With this opportunity, we will get increased resources and be able to focus much more on Calabash and Xamarin Test Cloud. Will will continue to work on the Calabash, and we'll still be here: following and answering questions on the forums, managing pull requests, fixing bugs, developing features etc.

You're welcome to ask questions here, but we recommend reading Xamarin announcement and watching the keynote from Xamarin Evolve where the acquisition and product was announced.

http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/16/xamarin-launches-test-cloud-automated-mobile-ui-testing-platform-acquires-mobile-test-company-lesspainful/

Thanks to everyone for using and supporting Calabash and LessPainful! We think the future looks even more promising and bright!

Congrats Karl!

What is the future of LessPainful? Is LessPainful basically Test Cloud now? Should we switch or can we still use LessPainful? How will this choice change in the near future?

Ivan

Thanks everyone. Some of you have asked about LessPainful vs Xamarin Test Cloud.

LessPainful has been fully acquired and will be renamed to Xamarin Denmark (or something similar).

Basically existing LessPainful customers stay on the LessPainful cloud and will be transitioned shortly after Xamarin Test Cloud launches for the general public. Some LessPainful customers may be invited to join the Beta program though.

That means still we can use Calabash without any issues right? I mean as far as licensing is concerned. Hope still it will be an Open Source tool.

Thanks,
Jeevan

Calabash is still licensed using the Eclipse Public License (EPL), yes.

Hi Karl,

Could you specify if calabash would remain OPEN Source or not ? we know that your cloud based solution would be paid with xamairan eventually.

How about JVM support ? would you be continuing JVM or not , we are very much awaiting for it.

As we mentioned in the announcement post, Calabash will remain open source, we will still develop it - probably even more than before! Ruby will remain fully supported: bugs will be fixed and new features will be developed.

The only change is that we will focus on C# support soon, and Java/JVM will not be our focus (at first anyway).    However, once the merge into Frank completes, there is already a good Java client that we can use - so JVM support will be automatic on iOS and Android shouldn't be that much work (and there is Calabash-Driver for Android which already works although not our "official" client) .

Congrats Karl , You said "Main goal is to enable developers to write cross-platform mobile apps using C# in either Visual Studio or Xamarin Studio. " what about calabash-jvm development ? is it still in developing stage ?

it would be great if we can calabash - jvm for mobile automation ? Please confirm  !

Thanks ,

I think I've answered this a couple of times here. Please search the forum.

Our focus is not JVM right now. It is actually possible to run Calabash using the JVM

1) Calabash-JVM is a working prototype and currently being worked on by Mayank Jain. We'll not work on that right now, though.

2) Calabash-driver uses Calabash Android on the backend

3) I haven't tried this but you could run Calabash using jRuby

Either way I still consider JVM important although not our focus now. Porting a C# client to Java should be all that much work either...

Please read this:

and this:

"This is the place to ask questions and share knowledge about Calabash iOS.
When writing a new question, try to give the reader a feeling that you've already made an effort, but that you a now stuck.
1. Explain very precisely what you want to do.
2. Explain what you have already tried, and what the results are (what happened? possibly log traces).
3. Try searching the group for similar questions or errors.
4. Of course read the checkout the docs: https://github.com/calabash/calabash-ios/wiki
Following this recipe will get questions answered much more quickly"
