If you don`t mind, I would like to share information in that issue. Assuming that in Chinese crude steel production carbon dioxide emissions are at a level of 1 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel - based on IPCC - (other sources state that Chinese steel industry is highly energy intensive, with a factor reaching even 2 tCO2/t steel, according to Beijing University of Science and Technology) the total annual emission from steel is ca. 500 MtCO2 which counts for about 10% of China's emissions.
On average one tree absorbs about 1 tone of CO2 in it's lifetime. So to offset one-year's China steel production's emissions you need to plant ca. 500 million of trees (that would require 10 000 sq km of land or more...) and let them grow for their lifetime.
But absorbtion of CO2 by tree highly depends on tree age, species and climate - e.g. 6 twenty-five year old pine trees in cold and temperate climate absorb 1 tonne of CO2 per year; 36 twenty-five year old maple trees in warm temperate climate absorb 1 tonne of CO2. Generally speaking boreal forests (taiga) absorbs much greater amount of CO2 than rainforest.

There is a query from my Filipino friend in Nigeria regarding crude steel production and CO2 Emission.That in 2001 annual crude steel production in Red China was less than 100 Million Metric Tons,but now 500 Million Metric Tons is produced.Do you have the data if how many CO2 eating trees are needed to arrest this CO2 Emission?Thanks and regards
