1) #20 California Golden Bears @ #34 Oregon State Beavers - Saturday, 11/7 @ 7:00 PM EST @ The Baseball Tavern
"Canada was built on dead beavers.'" - Margaret Atwood

When: Saturday, November 7, 7:00-11:00pm
Where: The Baseball Tavern at 1270 Boylston Ave, Boston, MA
Transportation: MBTA to Fenway (Green D line) or Kenmore (Green B, C, and D lines)
Cost: FREE

Here's a quick version of "The More You Know" prior to this week's showdown with Oregon State.
  • Oregon State is 5-3 and 3-2 in the Pac-10, after being defeated in conference play by USC and Arizona.
  • OSU is the home of the modern Maraschino Cherry.  Apparently, lab students "accidentally" swallowed a trial medicine and decided that it was so good, it needed to be used to marinate cherries.
  • Oregon State has been one of the most consistently successful Pac-10 teams in the past decade.  A winning record this season will see the Beavers go to their 8th bowl in ten years.
  • Back when OSU was still referred to as Oregon SAC (State Agricultural College), the school's mascot was a coyote named Jimmie.  It then adopted the Bulldog as its symbol shortly after the turn of the 20th century.  After moving to a human mascot for several years, the OSU Beaver was first adopted in the 1920s.
  • Beavers in the wild mate for life, yet are only allowed by the state of Oregon to have state-recognized civil unions.
  • Saturday's game will receive only regional coverage on Fox Sports Net, which means that the best place to watch the game, as usual, will be at the Baseball Tavern with your friends at CACNE!
This game should be big for the Golden Bears and a good competitive match-up.  Hope to see you at the Baseball Tavern!

5) CACNE Membership Renewal Time

Annual CACNE membership began anew on September 1! While most of our events are free, there are costs to keep the club functioning, as well as fabulous benefits that you receive as an official CACNE Member:

- Savings on: CACNE events that cost money, awesome CACNE shirts, and more. Go to 2 or 3 things all year and you will have made your dues back in member savings on our events and gear!

- Memberships help support the Cal New England scholarship that we award each year to a local high school graduate who will be attending Cal in the fall. The benefit for you here is that you feel good about yourself!

- Exclusive information about smaller, members-only events throughout the year - including the CACNE @ The Celtics Event coming next January.  Always be in the loop about fantastic Cal alumni opportunities in the area!

And how much would you guess such incredible benefits would cost you? Brace yourself: only $15 for the entire year!

In conclusion, I leave you with the words of one of Berkeley's most famous alumni, Google CEO Eric Schmidt: "I remember being struck by how much the world was not the way we thought it was, that there was infinite variation in how people viewed the world."

If you've read this far, you're incredibly patient, and thank you for your continued commitment to CACNE.

Go Bears!
