Hello CACNE Members!

I don't know about all of you, but I spent a good period of my Thanksgiving week celebrating that New England is Bear Territory!  What a great Big Game!  Over 200 people from the CACNE and Stanford groups came together to watch an amazing football game, after which your Golden Bears deservedly kept the Axe!

A couple of notes following the Big Game:
- If you have any photos from the CACNE Big Game event, please email them to pres...@calnewengland.org so we can get our photo gallery updated.
- I understand that some people did not receive shirts.  I am pleasantly surprised to say that demand exceeded supply for both of our shirt versions.  We have some records, but if you did not get a t-shirt, please e-mail me at pres...@calnewengland.org so I can get a firm count.  We will be ordering a new batch shortly, although I cannot say for sure yet if we will get them by the holidays.  If you were trying to get the CACNE shirt as a gift, and we discover that we cannot deliver in a timely manner, we will refund your order.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

Don't start resting on your laurels, CACNE!  We have one more regular season football game, and some other great events coming up.

1) #19 California Golden Bears @ Washington Huskies - Saturday, 12/5 @ 6:30 PM EST @ The Baseball Tavern
"A dog's idea of personal grooming is to roll on a dead fish." - James Gorman

When: Saturday, December 5, 6:30-11:00pm
Where: The Baseball Tavern at 1270 Boylston Ave, Boston, MA
Transportation: MBTA to Fenway (Green D line) or Kenmore (Green B, C, and D lines)
Cost: FREE

Here's a quick version of "The More You Know" prior to this week's showdown with Washington.
  • Washington is 4-7 and 3-5 in the Pac-10.  They have two very big wins against USC and Arizona.
  • Some scientists suggests that Bears and Huskies can peacefully co-exist, but even the video evidence suggests that the Bear is always dominant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE-Nyt4Bmi8).
  • For many years, Washington was a Pac-10 football powerhouse, but has not finished a season with a winning record since 2003.
  • Washington's original mascot was the "Sun Dodger", an obscure term for a wild horse which was also a subtle jab at the area's horribly overcast and dismal weather.
  • Alaskan Huskies are notorious for picking and losing fights against larger, more powerful animals such as moose and bears.
  • The Soup's Joel McHale got his first acting experience by lying his way onto the Washington Huskies football team as a freshman.
  • Saturday's game will receive only regional coverage on Fox Sports Net, making it hard to find in Boston.  This means that the best place to watch the game, as usual, will be at the Baseball Tavern with your friends at CACNE!
This game should be big for the Golden Bears and a good competitive match-up.  Hope to see you at the Baseball Tavern!

2) Pac-10 Toys For Tots Happy Hour - Thursday, 12/3 @ 6:00 PM EST @ Big City

At long last, Pac-10 Boston Happy Hours are back!  The December Pac-10 Happy Hour/Toys for Tots drive will be Thursday, December 3rd.  The price of admission is a toy and the Pac-10 Boston group will provide some apps and a pool table.

When: Thursday, December 3, 6:00-8:30pm
Where: Big City at 138 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA
Transportation: MBTA to Harvard Avenue (Green B line)
Cost: FREE (but seriously, bring a toy)

Thanks to the UCLA Club for organizing this event!

3) Save the Date: CACNE @ the Celtics, Monday, 1/25 @ 7:30 PM EST

That's right CACNE fans!  The Celtics might not be sporting Leon Powe anymore, but we will continue our tradition of supporting the finest NBA team this side of the New Jersey Nets.  The Celtics will be playing the Los Angeles Clippers in what promises to be a very competitive match-up - or something like that.

Tickets will be extremely limited for this event (tentatively, ~20) and will be available to paid CACNE members only.  More details to come.

5) A Call for CACNE Pictures!

We are trying to get our CACNE Picasa page updated with more pictures.  If you have any CACNE pictures from the past year that you would like to share, please email them to pres...@calnewengland.org.

7) A Personal Note From Your CACNE President

Some of you may be following the recent turmoil on the Berkeley campus and in the UC System.  Currently, students throughout the UC system face cuts in services and classes as well as a 32% increase in tuition.  There have been accusations of police brutality as well as some accusations that some of the students' demonstrations were less than peaceful.

I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to take some time this week to catch yourselves up on the situation and educate yourself on both sides of this argument.  Berkeley and the UC system stand at a precipice, with a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the future of our alma mater.  While CACNE may not take any official action on this situation, this is something in which individual alumni can and should involve themselves.

---

In conclusion, I leave you with the words of one of Berkeley's most famous alumni, Academy Award Winner Gregory Peck: "Tough times don't last, tough people do."

If you've read this far, you're incredibly patient, and thank you for your continued commitment to CACNE.

Go Bears!
