1. Pac-10 Boston Toys for Tots Social (12/6)
2. CACNE Board Meeting in central MA (12/9)
3. Celtics Game with Leon "The Show" Powe (2/6)
4. CACNE Membership and Shirts
5. Oski's Trivia Corner
Dear New England Golden Bears,
Thank you for all coming out to make Big Game Week Boston 2007 such a success! If Nate Longshore could toss a football as well as we can have a party, we'd all be buying our Rose Bowl tickets right now. Have a look at our
Big Game photos and this year's
Ode to The Play by Neil Cohn!
As it turns out, our football team will have
one more chance to salvage a winning season. Because the bowl (our fifth straight!) will be on New Year's Eve, and many of our members will be out of town or with their families, CACNE will likely not be organizing a big viewing party. However, if you are interested in getting together with other Cal fans for the game, do contact us and we'll see what we can arrange around New England.
On the bright sports side, our men's basketball team is 5-0, our women's basketball team is 7-1 and ranked #13 in the nation, and we just beat U$C to win the NCAA water polo championship! On the bright CACNE side, we are just getting started in bringing fun and interesting events to you to connect and enhance our alumni community and experience out East! ...
1. Pac-10 Boston Toys for Tots Social
Join the who's who of Pac-10 Boston this Thursday for UCLA Boston's annual Toys for Tots Social. Celebrate the holidays with good company, a cup of 'nog, and
by bringing a new, unwrapped toy
of any size that we will donate to the
Toys for Tots Foundation.
When: Thursday, December 6, 7-10pm
Where:
Boston Beer Works near Fenway Park (61 Brookline Ave; Boston, MA)
Hungry?: UCLA will provide light appetizers for all who attend.
Driving?: We have pre-reserved space, just ask for the Pac-10 Toys for Tots Party at the host desk and they will point you in the right direction.
2. CACNE Potluck Board
Meeting
If you're interested in getting involved at all with
CACNE beyond attending the events and reading these delightful emails, you are very welcome to join the
CACNE Board
for our monthly Potluck
Board Meeting. We'll be getting out of Boston to central MA for this one, and laying down our plans for the next year regarding outreach, membership, and major events, including our spring Gala.
When: Sunday, December 9, 1pm
Where: Hosted by
CACNE VP Social Harry Spitulnik
in Northborough, MA. If you're interested in attending, please let us know and we'll arrange rides!
3. Celtics Game with Leon "The Show" Powe
The Boston
Celtics
are back this year, with Kevin Garnett and former Cal star Leon "The
Show" Powe helping to lead the charge! CACNE will be taking a trip to
cheer for The Show and see the boys in green (which is really just blue
and gold together, isn't it?) take on the LA Clippers.
Last year CACNE caught the
Celtics vs the Miami Heat and went
nuts as Powe played 32 minutes, shut down Shaq, and notched his first
career double-double. We even got to
meet Leon after the game!
When:
Wednesday, February 6, 7:30pm. Yes, that's a few months away, but we need to book now. Plus, our ticket allotment is selling fast!
Where: TD Banknorth Garden
Cost: $35 ($30 for paid members)
Due
to a limited number of tickets left for this already almost sold out
season, and CACNE needing to pay up front for the block of seats, we're taking RSVPs at
www.calnewengland.org/celtics.html. The first 30 paid RSVPs get the seats, and we're already half sold out!
4. CACNE Membership and Shirts
It's time to re-up on your CACNE Membership! While most of our events are free, there
are costs with keeping the club functioning, as well as fabulous
benefits that you receive as an official CACNE Member:
- Savings on: CACNE events that cost
money, awesome new CACNE t-shirts, and more. Already, you can have made your dues
back in member savings on our events and gear!
- Memberships
help support the Cal New England scholarship that we award each year to
a local high school graduate who will be attending Cal in the
fall. The benefit for you here is that you feel good about yourself!
- Exclusive information about smaller, members-only events
throughout the year. Always be in the loop about fantastic Cal alumni
opportunities in the area!
5. Oski's Trivia Corner
The answer to last week's question,
"Why did the first Big Game begin over an hour behind schedule?
" is:
Herbert Hoover, the 1892 Stanfurd ballboy and future lackluster President, forgot to bring the ball to the game, and they had to send a man on horseback to fetch a new one. There's a Keynesian economics joke in there somewhere, but I can't think of it at the moment.
Cheers for the right answer to Chris Crutchfield, Lia Deromedi, Ying Huang, Diana Chen, and Laurie Keating!
This week's challenge (and those smarties who reply to Misha with the correct answer by
Sunday will be put into a drawing for another fabulous
www.calstudentstore.com gift certificate- good for any Cal gear you'll ever need- at the end of the month):
Cape Cod can be a dangerous place to swim, but sometimes help can unexpectedly arrive if you're in trouble. Name both the aquatic actress who once saved a drowning boy there, as well as the recent Berkeley honoree whose work she
shares in a later film.
Take care and GO BEARS!
