Mickey,
I had an Espar installed from the factory so I can't give you any advice on
the installation other than keeping the exhaust vent as high above the water
line as possible. I also had the factory install a loop in the exhaust tube
to further prevent any migration of water into the unit. If I remember
correctly the factory was in contact with Espar regarding the addition of
the loop, apparently the air intake and exhaust have to be of proper sizes
and lengths for proper function. The unit itself works extremely well and
heats the cabin quite quickly even in lower forty degree temperatures. I
have three vents, one in the aft cabin, one in the main and one in the
forward. The unit is installed on the starboard side of the rear lazerette.
Good Luck.
Nick.

Mickey-

Like Nick our unit was installed by the factory and works extremely
well. I believe they worked with an installer from Rhode Island whose
name escapes me at the moment. If you're interested I can get their
name when I return to our boat on the 12th.

Our unit is tied into the freshwater supply system for hot water
circulation in the cabin (3 outlets, same as Nick's). The only issue
we've had is the batteries must be fully charged for the unit to
operate, it is very sensitive to voltages less than 13.4V.

Best,
Charlie

Thanks Nick. Do you know which model Espar you have?

Cabo Rico installed my Espar D3LC hot air heater. It's a little small for a
42ft boat, but I bought it before I had CURLEW built, with the intention of
installing it in my previous boat. As so often, I never got around to it.
I have two vents in the main cabin, one near the galley, and one further
forward. It keeps the boat warm enough, but I guess it would be too small
for a live-aboard in a New England winter. Same experience as Charlie: it
is sensitive to low voltage. Often I have to start the engine to get the
battery voltage above 12.5V to get the heater to start. It helps to clean
the glow plug and its screen often. US diesel fuel is less pure than
European diesel and causes significant carbon built-up in the combustion
chamber. That's also why the controller of US Espar heaters is different
from the European (Eberspacher) version. The US importer disables the lowest
setting on the thermostat.
