We agree and chose the folding ladder from:

http://www.mysticstainless.com/foldaway.html

..easy mounting hardware on the toe track rail and can be easily
changed to either side of the boat if need be..

That looks like mine, you can also buy extra rail mounts so you can move it to either side. It must be much cheaper if you buy it at the boat show as I don't think I paid that much for it. But that may have been 10 or so years ago.

Mickey-

I think you're go'n to be in for a shock on what it will cost to
replace the stern ladder..as we found out after finding more bad
stainless in our boat...

Sell one like this

Garelick Gull Wing Boat Ladder Transom Mounting Bracket
Guys I,have teo of these mounted to the side of the boat # 8 self
taping screws,i,BELEIVE IT IS THE ORIGINAL STERN LADDER,Pardon
caps.Seems to work fine .Can remove for storage and istalls quickly
have used it getting on and off the boat,185lbs no problems. If just
moving the ladder from the stern seems an ok way to do it.Could do
both sides for 70.00 bucks.

Needing a more user friendly boarding ladder I built this from an idea I had seen on a trip to Southwest Harbor, Maine. I made it from 5/4 white oak planed to 1" for strength. Extended, it is 6' long with 6 steps. When extended the bottom three steps are below the water line to make it easier for us 60 somethings to get out of the water and making dinghy and kayak entries a little easier. Folded to 3' it is out of the water and held in place with a latch to keep the bottom piece out of the water until needed. A s/s steel spring is in place to keep the bottom section from floating when used. That is similar to the spring on a kick-up sunfish rudder. A lanyard is attached to the bottom rail to pull the bottom section up out of the water after boarding.
I made the fit to the rub rail so the ladder can be used any place mid-ship on port or stbd. The 1/2" line is used to keep the ladder against the hull and is not needed for vertical strength since the ladder is supported by the rub rail. I had originally installed s/s flat bar to hook into the cars on the track, but didn't like the way the metal brackets extended. It would have made storage a lot more difficult. As you can see there are many options for both use and storage.
If anyone has an interest in building one let me know. I'll be happy to share measurements and ideas with our group. Total cost of materials about $95.

The boarding ladder is Watco Teak oil with a little Pecan wood stain added for color. This is easy, just wiped on, good penetrating water protection without being slippery- 3 coats- no sanding between.
All the brightwork on the boat is Epifanes. Two coats woodfinish gloss, four coats Epifanes gloss. BTW, I know they are expensive, but the 2" oval epifanes brush makes a big difference.

It does seem that stowage is a bit of an issue with side-boarding ladders.

We where attracted to that design in fact we went so far as to contact
an individual at the Annapolis Boat show to possibly construct one for
us..but as you said stowage was an issue..so we went with this..

http://www.mysticstainless.com/foldaway.html

..can be moved along the toe rail track and out of the way of lines
and sheets

I store mine on the stern and put it on the side when using it. It is the fold up type and am thinking of just using a non-fold up and storing it behind the back stay???

Maybe I'm missing something..but after looking at a couple of 38's on
line.. You all don't have stern ladders like most of us 34's with the
exception of hull #6 which has a swim platform?
