Wow, Clayton and I were talking that there appears to be a nice
concentration of Cabo Rico Owners here in the Upper Middle Bay. Are
there any of you who would like to meet up for a gathering? We would
be happy to host something casual at our marina or just anchored out
at a suitable location.

A June weekend gathering would provide time for many Spring tasks to
be completed or at least up to the "able to use the boat" stage and
hopefully not sweltering weather. I am happy to organize something at
another location other than Lankford Bay Marina...just that they know
me there and it is a pretty spot with slips, moorings and good spots
to anchor.

Course wherever we go, it will be lots of amazingly beautiful boats in
one location. A cove filled with Cabo Rico's could make a very
interesting photo.

Come back if you have any interest in getting together or if you would
like to sail with us to participate.

kind regards,

Leslie

That's a little far for me but would love to be part of that.
Maybe in a couple of years
would be cool to get a bridge shot of that.

This response is terrific. The weekends I am focusing on are June 8/9 or 22/23. If either will exclude anyone, let me know. I did not want to try to compete with Father's Day weekend and we are a small enough group I want to make it available for as many vessels as possible.

Thanks for your replies.

We would not be able to make the 8/9 but could possibly make the 22/23 dates. Of course, if 8/9 works out best for the group we will understand.

Would love to raft up with all of you fellow Cabo Ricans! The 22/23 date sounds better for the Buiochas crew as well. We would be coming up from Fleets Bay area (Lower Chesapeake) so a more southern rendezvous point would be helpful for us. Annapolis area?

We are delighted with the positive response to the Cabo Rico Get Together.  The weekend of June 22, 2013 will be here before you know it!

This is a popular time for visiting transient vessels and if you will be wanting a slip, you should call Lankford Bay Marina at 410-778-1414 to reserve one.  They will need your required beam, depth, power needs and credit card number.  Do give my name and refer to the Cabo Rico Owners Group Get Together.  If you want a mooring ball, those are also available and there is space to anchor as well.

Lankford Bay Marina is a small, family owned marina, located at 23002 McKinleyville Rd,  Rock Hall, MD.  They offer a well stocked store and have skilled personnel for any services you may need. There is a pool, heads, showers, laundry and pump out.. The setting is picturesque and serene with a lovely view of Cackaway Island.  It will be a nice spot to chew and chat about our beautiful boats.

We will supply the charcoal, protein, salad and dessert for the crews.  I will leave this as a BYOB and any pre-ops or sides you wish to add to the fair.

As time gets close, I will appreciate the numbers to expect for this weekend.  Looking forward to meeting all in person

Good Sailing!!

Hey Leslie and all,

The “Buiochas” crew is firming up plans for the CR weekend as well. Our current plan is to work our way up to Annapolis the weekend before, find secure harborage for the week then head out for Lankford Bay early on the 22nd. We will pick up a mooring there, if available, or drop the hook and see you ashore.

We are excited and looking forward to the social! Leslie, we also thank you for organizing the event!!

Well I did not get to sail the bay when I bought Opus as timing was tight and  I had to ship her to Canada.

My wife Nancy wants to go to the rendezvous and loves the wine store in Annapolis.

We have decided to rent a boat in Oxford for a few days since our boat is so far away. Even though it won't be a Cabo we will be there looking forward to exchanging lots of ideas and will bring pictures of Opus. We have secured a Tartan  37 called Spirit 2 and are not sure but think a mooring ball or anchoring will be fine as she is reported to have ground tackle.

So Leslie count us in.

Nancy and Jamie, you guys are Too Cool!!!

I am so excited to have you coming.  We will be so glad  to see you again after you treated me to a wonderful sail aboard Opus last Fall.  Do bring us news of your canvas and wood working projects.  Pictures are always good.

Travel safe and don't hesitate to call or email if you have questions about the location, depths or good gunkholes.  So funny to hear you're going to Annapolis for wine.  What about the liquor stores on the NH state line?  Ya gotta tell me more about this place in Annapolis.  How have I missed buying booze there?

Great news to hear you are planning to come for this sail in!

with warm regards,

Leslie

Leslie you are to kind.

The liquor store is at the end of the show boat area on the west side and the owner really knows his wine. He will open a bottle for us to try if we are not sure about it . ( but then we usually end up buying a case )

We are trying to meet up with Mickey on the way up the bay as he will not be able to make the rendevous . Someone has the nerve to get married that satruday and he will be in attendance. but other than that we

get the boat Thursday am and return it sometime Monday. If you have any suggestions of good gunk holes or places we should see we are all ears.

Is there anything you would like us to bring like mapple syrup, back bacon or real beer ?

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

We are disappointed to hear Mickey will miss the get together.  We will have to drink a toast to him in his absence to say thanks for all he contributes here.

Gee, the places to anchor on the Bay are as varied as you may wish.  Annapolis is a busy place, full of history and the Naval Academy.  There is also St. Michaels for a nice town to visit if you are looking for a good museum and a quaint village.  The Wye River has some wonderful places to drop the hook.  Shaw Bay if it is hot and breathless and further up the creek, Dividing Creek for protection and lots of eagles to see.

My plan is to have char coal, a good selection of flat iron steaks, chicken and crab cakes, a large salad and a couple of desserts.  I will also have a cooler filled with ice, paper plates, glasses, forks and knives, napkins, table coverings.  As I stated, I was going to leave what each wished to drink to them and any additions are always welcome.  If you are wishing to bring a bottle of a tasty wine, I am sure we will all help you enjoy.  :)

This is all about the people, friends and getting together.  Getting to share the weekend with you will be the hit of the function.

Hey, what does that boat draw?  That is also key to making decisions as to where you are going to go.

best regards,

Leslie

Well the Cabo Rico Summer Solstice Sail-In will be here before you know it and we are very excited to have a chance to meet up at Lankford Bay Marina.  We will be there to meet or assist anyone in any way.  Since it is our marina, we will have a vehicle to give anyone a lift to West Marine, a liquor or grocery store should there be any wants or needs.  We will be there by Thursday, June 20th and will take a slip to facilitate any hauling of supplies from the boat.  (we are normally on a mooring)

The vessels I have currently on the list to attend are the following:

1)  Tom, "Eclipse" from Sailing Emporium

2)  OB, "Oleh B" from Haven Harbour

3)  June and Duane Ruby, "Sea Clearly" from North Carolina

4)  Thierry Danz, "Curlew" from Baltimore

5)  Rich and Robyn Joiner, "Buiochas"  from Southern Bay

6)  Nancy and Jamie from Canada, owners of "Opus" (dressed as a Tartan)

7)  Stan from Worton Creek

8)  Clayton and Leslie, "Tango" in home port

Please send me a note giving me the number of crew you will bring and the day you expect to arrive.

We will have our dinner, Saturday, June 22nd on a spit of land that is along the water that includes grills and picnic tables, benches and a small beach.  I will have some balloons out so folks can find the location.  Radio is a great way to let us know you have arrived.

We will suply the charcoal, all paper goods, ice, steaks, crabcakes and some assorted salads and dessert..  I hope all can meet up around 4:30 PM for a chance to make aquaintances and talk about our vessels, our adventures and mis-adventures.

At this point, all I can ask you to do besides letting me know who to expect is that you put in some words with the weather Gods for Fair Weather!!

Eager for you all to arrive!!  Anyone who did not sign up before is welcome.  All I ask is a head count.

Good sailing and smooth seas.

Sorry we haven't been very active in the group but we got our boat almost a year ago and we are still learning how to take care of her.

We would love to meet all of you but we are a little far away and because of work we cannot go.

Have fun and if you are in our area look us up at Harbor Town Marina!

Great news, Mickey!  It did not "feel right" for you not to join us in some manner.

You (or anyone else coming by land)can get to Lankford Bay Marina via these directions. For GPS, the address is 23002 McKinleyville Road, Rock Hall, MD.

From Chestertown follow Rt. 20 West towards Rock Hall.  Take a Left onto Edesville Pineyneck Road.  Follow to Stop Sign and turn Left on Rt. 288.  You will take the Left at a Marine's house (flags, statues) staying on Rt. 288. Take the Left at the "Y" at McKinleyville Road. Go past the Rock Hall Yacht Club to the end of the road you will find Lankford Bay Marina.

If you miss the Edesville Pineyneck turn, you can continue further down 20 and pick up 288 by the the auto parts store. Then turn Left at Stop Sign. Than follow the directions from the "Y".

I can offer up wine and cheese in the marina. There are many choices for places to eat in Rock Hall for any who wish to continue.

My phone number is 484-631-5572 for info or assistance.

Wow, anyone wishing to bring food to share for either day will be welcomed.

What I will offer up on Saturday will be steak, crab cakes, a pasta salad and a tossed salad. Something for dessert will also appear. Don't know what that will be but I am sure I will be hit with some inspiration at some point. :-)

Certainly we can retreat to one of the many eateries in town for Friday as well. We have a van and the marina has a bus if we are many.

I am seriously becoming more and more depressed that I cannot make it to the event. It sounds like such a great gathering.

Just a quick question. I am working on new refrigeration. Our CR38 is a 1984. Anyone know the length of the ice box. The width(fore n Aft)  is just at 18 in. I seem to have misplaced my notes or left them on the boat.

Yesterday, we had SeaClearly all packed and ready to go on our adventure to the Chesapeake.  We were so excited. We left our slip, went through our neighborhood inlet and never made it past the second markers in the channel.  We were aground.  We were aground hard.  We tried for a while and then called TowBoatUS.  They finally got us off after two hours ($4000) and in the process the "Captain" rammed our beautiful boat with his towboat causing damage to our cap rail, fiberglass and stainless rub rail.  Obviously we are beyond upset and honestly this post is very hard to write.

We have had trouble with the depth in the channel before but it looked like the water level would be OK, well it wasn't with our full tanks.  So much for marked channels.

So our plan is to unload the boat to lighten her up as much as possible.  Today the water is now probably 3" less than yesterday but whenever it comes back up we need to bring her somewhere to be hauled out and inspected.

On the positive side, no one got hurt.  We have contacted our insurance carrier and we will see how that goes.

It is very unlikely that we will make the get together.  We sincerely hope you all have a wonderful time!

Best Regards,

June and Duane Ruby

So sorry, For others; I have found if you are aground hard, wait for the next high tide. Do not try to be pulled off. If not aground too much have any line from the top of the mast extended and have another boat pull on the line to heel you and slide out.

Thanks Breck.

We really don't have tides only wind driven depth changes.  Another complication I didn't include in the post was that by the time TowBoatUS showed up (3 hours after being called), we were under a severe thunderstorm watch with 25-30 knot winds and 3 foot waves pushing us further into shallow water.  Before TowBoatUs showed up we did raise the sails to try to heal our way off.  If the storm had not been headed our way we would have worked on it more and/or set an anchor.

We will not be calling TowBoatUS again.

Hi Mickey,

Yes it was a horrible start and essentially the end of that trip.  We will be hauling her out in Wanchese, NC and may aim at a trip to Beaufort next Friday.

We are on the sound side in Kill Devil Hills with mud bottom.

It sucks that we are losing cruising grounds to silting or lack of maintenance at the same time as sea water is rising. Is the dismal swamp canal still navigable to boats with 5 ft draft? I hope to ocme visit you at KDH sometime. I've been tehre many times by car a few years back.

Dear June and Duane:  I feel ill reading your post. We are so sorry for your problems. We are also shocked to hear your TowBoat US charge. I guess it was not a large RIB that they were using to rescue you. Sounds like a huge bill to damage your vessel. Now with the cost of repairs and time lost it is a lose/lose venture. We were so eager to have you join us. Eager to meet you and see SeaClearly, too. If you would like to come by car, you would be very welcomed. I am having cell phone issues so hope this goes out.
With hope the damage is only minor.
All the best. Leslie and Clayton

Thank you Leslie and Clayton!

We appreciate your empathy.  The schedule is now to have her hauled and inspected as soon as we have confidence in the water level.  We have removed all of our trip provisions (sad), emptied the water tanks, removed the life raft, stern anchor, etc, etc, etc.

Duane devised a clever way to determine her exact draft and just as our friend Thierry told us, lean and mean like she is now, she is 5'6".

We also took our dinghy through the channel with our handheld sonar and located all of the new shoaling.  If we get a couple more inches of water and follow a very narrow path we should make it out to the boatyard.

I can't tell how disappointed we are that we will miss this event.  We must stay here and monitor her inspection and repair.

Maybe we will try a trip to Annapolis for the sailboat show.

Duane and June,

What a rotten thing to happen at the beginning of a cruise.  I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be.  Fortunate that no one was hurt.  Also that you were close to home.  We'll toast SeaClearly and her crew to a quick and painless repair.

As Eclipse is still having her bottom prettied up, it looks like I'll be arriving on wheels as well.  Cheryl is off for a "weekend with the girls", it will be just myself and crew member Spirit.  He barks a bit (youth!) but is in general good company.  I'm planning on coming down Friday to do some other boat work, so if there is anything planned or contrived for Friday evening, we're game. (cell: 610 662 0073) Either way, we'll be there on Saturday.

Leslie / Clay,  is there anything in particular you'd like me to bring?  If not, I'll come up with something, but I thought I'd ask. Bear in mind I'll have my truck if you need help with transport.  Thanks so much for putting this all together.

Sweet.
Two questions:

1: can the top shelf "slide" over the evaporator?
2: Tell me more about that shelf with the batteries you have on the port lazarette. Is this the only place where ou have batteries?

Comment: I've found that my compressor in the lazarette works well but may overhead on the hotest days or when I run the engine> Do you have an engine room blower? Do you have any sort of ventilation around the compressor?

The top shelf slides back over the evaporator and gives easy access to items on the second shelf  and all the way down to the drain. You can see the two screw holes I filled from the old higher installation. Having removed the aft fuel tank years ago I have plenty of open space and air moving behind the engine and with the larger evaporator I have notice a lot less compressor time. The shelf arrangement seems to have eliminated the condensation I always had on the rear door. The copper lines were easily located thru the access under the galley stove then along the hull thru the bulkhead with an easy turn to the compressor. This is a two man job so you don't kink anything on the way. The foam insulation fit perfectly from the box exit all the way to the compressor. You can see frost in the photo and I don't have any trouble making ice in the four trays.
The 4 Optima blue -top batteries are all in the rack under the new compressor. I have the 16,000 BTU A/C compressor and air handler under the quarter berth on stbd. so weights are fairly well balanced. The original Adler Barbour compressor was under the galley sink so there was little room with water heater and fresh water systems also under the sink. It had little air there and that never seemed to overheat. I had to replace the fridge system because while replacing a fresh water pressure pump in that confined space I kinked the copper coolant line at the compressor and lost all refrigerant.
The extra space under the sink is a big hit for cleaning supplies and a happy first mate makes for a happy ship.
