It is not required to register for the Great Western Bicycle Rally in order to attend our CABO General Membership/Board meeting in Paso Robles May 25th... but, there will be some good riding and activities for those who do.

MAY 2013 NEWSLETTER

ONLINE REGISTRATION CLOSES MAY 19TH

Haven't registered yet for this year's Rally?  You still have until May 19th at 6pm to register online.  Otherwise, you will still be able to register on-site at the Rally. Either way, we look forward to seeing you next week.  Go to www.greatwesternbicyclerally.com to register online or to print out the registration form.

GETTING AROUND THE FAIRGROUNDS

Over the Memorial Day weekend, many of you will call the fairgrounds(official name is Paso Robles Event Center) home.  If you haven't been to the Rally before, here is a quick view of the fairgrounds map.  When you arrive at the fairgrounds, you will come to Commercial Building 2 to pick up your registration packet.  Please check the Rally Schedule to see what hours registration pick up is open.  Need help finding us, here are directions to the fairgrounds.

PLANNING FOR BEAUTIFUL WEATHER

Typically you will experience some fantastic weather conditions in Paso Robles in late May.  But it's good to be prepared for cool temps in the early morning and evenings, with things warming up in the afternoon.  The best times to ride are in the morning, as winds tend to pick up in the afternoon.  Rain is not typical, but last year we had a pop-up hail storm Friday afternoon, so anything is possible.

THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING

With so many activities at the Rally, we couldn't possibly do everything ourselves.  We can't thank our volunteers enough for lending a helpful hand.  If you would like to volunteer, go to our Volunteer Page on our website to see the list of duties where we need help.  Or you can come see us at registration to sign-up.  It's a great way to fill a few hours and make some new friends.  This year, our volunteers will get a free Rally T-Shirt.

WHAT DO I BRING? WHAT RIDES DO I DO?

Besides your bicycles, camping equipment, lounging attire and cycling gear, make sure to bring your sense of adventure.  Whether you are Rally veteran or a newcomer, make sure to challenge yourself by trying a new group ride or rally activity.

Bring plenty of sunscreen and plan on staying hydrated so you will be at your best when out on the road.

Not sure which rides to do?  Ask us for recommendations or ask one of your fellow rally cyclists for ideas.  All of the cycling is fantastic, so it's hard to go wrong.

RELAX & ENJOY THE SUNDAY BBQ

By the time Sunday afternoon rolls along, you will have put in some serious miles on the bicycle...maybe even just completed the Great Western 100 Century Ride.  Now it is time to unwind and enjoy a great meal.  The Lion's Club of Atascadero will be out again cooking up some of their amazing Santa Maria Style BBQ.  You can purchase tickets when you check in at registration or include it with your online registration.

If you feel like doing your own cooking, we will have the coals burning hot so all you need to do is cook it just the way you like it.  So trade your cycling helmet for your chef's hat and dazzle us with your cooking skills.

ICE CREAM, AWARDS, RAFFLE & MOVIE

Sunday evening is our final chance to get everyone together before we all pack up on Monday.  Make sure not to miss out on our Sunday evening festivities, which includes Ice Cream, Rally Awards, Raffle and our Sunday Evening Movie, American Flyers.   We will also be announcing the route for this years Director's Ride, which takes place on Monday morning.
