Subject: 10% of Caltrain riders bring a bike onboard
Hello Bicycle Commuters and Supporters,
CONTENTS:
1. Over 10% of Caltrain Passengers Bring a Bike Onboard 2. Report Bicycle
Bumps 3. Caltrain Will Keep Warm Planet Bikes Open 4. Your Bike Needs a
Destination Tag 5. Please Fold Folding Bikes
1. OVER 10% OF CALTRAIN PASSENGERS BRING A BIKE ONBOARD Caltrain's February
annual passenger counts show that over 10% of Caltrain passengers bring a
bike onboard. Thanks to Caltrain adding bike capacity in 2009 and 2011,
bikes-on-board users are Caltrain's fastest growing passenger segment. Since
February 2010, weekday bicycle boardings increased a whopping 60% while
walk-on boardings increased just 12%.
Unless Caltrain adds more bike capacity, growth in bike boardings will
stagnate. All trains now have two bike cars, but bike capacity is
inconsistent with 80 bike spaces on gallery trains and only 48 bike spaces
on Bombardier trains, insufficient to meet demand.
2. REPORT BICYCLE BUMPS
Passengers with bikes are still being left behind, or 'bumped'. Your bump
reports are critical to show Caltrain that Bombardier trains need three bike
cars. Please report bumps using the handy email link near the top of our web
page: http://www.sfbike.org/bob
Please report the following:
+ number of bumped cyclists (even if you are not one of them),
+ day,
+ station,
+ train number or time plus travel direction,
+ train type, i.e., old or gallery vs. new or Bombardier, and
+ any additional information such as how getting bumped affected your day.
3. CALTRAIN WILL KEEP WARM PLANET BIKES OPEN Warm Planet Bikes, the staffed
bicycle parking facility at the 4th & King Caltrain station, will stay open,
thanks to Caltrain's Board approving interim operating funds. We thank all
of you who wrote letters of support and made public comment at meetings.
Your efforts paid off!
4. YOUR BIKE NEEDS A DESTINATION TAG
All bikes must have a destination tag, so that other cyclists can stack
bikes according to how far they are going. New riders may not know about
destination tags, so please help them out, so that boarding and exiting go
smoothly. Ask a conductor for a free yellow destination tag, or stop by Warm
Planet Bikes at the 4th & King Caltrain station to pick up a destination
tag.
5. PLEASE FOLD FOLDING BIKES
As summer approaches, there will be more bikes on trains, and bumps will
increase. If you have a folding bike, please fold it to save a rack space
for another bike, so we can get more people on the train instead of left
behind on the platform with their bikes. Thank you!
Thanks for being a bicycle commuter (or a friend of one)!
More bikes, no bumps,
Shirley Johnson
