HEY CAACURH!
On behalf of the National Board of Directors (NBD), I am honored to
announce the finalists for the 2012 NACURH/ACUHO-I (Association of College
and University Housing Officers-International) Program Of the Year (POY)
Award.
This year, we had 14 bids submitted for consideration. After much
deliberation, the NBD has chosen the following two finalists who will
present at NACURH 2012 where a winner will be chosen:
- *San Francisco State University (PACURH) - There Is No Place Like Home*
- Program Description: The “No Place Like Home” Project, or NPLH for
short, is a community service program designed to educate the students of
San Francisco State University about youth and college age homelessness.
Occurring during National Volunteer Week, April 10th to 14th 2011, the
NPLH project focused on raising awareness regarding youth homeless,
gathering donations for local organizations, and encouraging students to
volunteer in their community. The NPLH project examined the larger issues
while focusing on the human stories that are often overlooked when
discussing homelessness. For when you say the word homeless, most
individuals come up with a very specific mental image. That of a grizzled
man, aged well beyond his years, pushing a shopping cart filled with
his meager belongings. This stereotype, this mistaken preconception was
something we wanted to change at SF State. The NPLH team wanted to give a
face to the 6,000 homeless youth under the age of 25 in San
Francisco. Over
the course of the program, NPLH showed the residents and students of SF
State that homelessness does not just exist out in Union Square
but that it
exists in our community, and our universities, and by extension exists in
our homes.
- *University of Colorado-Boulder (IACURH) - Talk About Tuesdays*
- Program Description: The 40th President of the United States,
Ronald Reagan, once said that "all great change in America begins at the
dinner table." With that idea as the basis for TAT, RHA worked tirelessly
in collaboration with Student Affairs and Housing Dining
Services (HDS) to
develop this program which would combine the feeling of sitting down to
dinner with friends together with an atmosphere that would encourage
meaningful conversation on universal and/or relevant topics or
themes. Talk
About Tuesdays (TAT), was designed as a large scale collaboration between
several different organizations including HDS, Student Affairs, and RHA.
The inspiration behind the program arose from the desire to
bring together
university students, staff, faculty and Boulder community members in a
space conducive to learning from each other, engaging in
conversation with
each other, and making real, personal, and lasting connections with other
members of the community.
If you are attending NACURH 2012, we encourage you to attend these
presentations.
Congrats to both schools and to all those schools that submitted bids!
