"Painting was as necessary to me as bread. It seemed like a window I could escape out of, to
take flight to another world."

Marc Chagall was bursting with energy to paint from the time he was a young boy to the year he
died at the age of ninety-seven. He loved vibrant colors and captured in his
art his vivid and unique vision of the world.

He lived as enthusiastically as he painted. His life began in a small village in Russia, where
his childhood was ordered by the joyous but strict movement of Hasidic Judaism.
He strove to study art and move beyond the restrictions of his village. Chagall's work as well
as world events took him to different parts of Russia, then many other parts of
the world, including Paris, New York, Israel, and finally back to France. Wherever he went, he
tried new art forms, and his fame and reputation continued to grow.

Natalie Bober chronicles Chagall's long and fruitful life with intensity, humor, and love for
her subject. She combines Chagall's passion for his Jewish influences with other
forces that shaped the painter's life and his art. Vera Rosenberry's drawings convey whimsically
the wide range and many phases of Chagall's life. Marc Chagall's limitless
energy and his unshakable belief in himself and his art make this an uplifting and appealing
book.

NATALIE BOBER believes that great people inspire others to find the greatness within themselves.
It is for this reason that she writes biographies for young people. Among
her subjects have been William Wordsworth, Robert Frost, Louise Nevelson, and Thomas Jefferson.
High praise and acclaim has greeted all of her books. She is currently
at work on a biography of Abigail Adams.
Mrs. Bober has taught English and been a reading specialist and textbook editor. She lectures
widely to young people and adults on the excitement of research and conducts
workshops on the art and craft of biography. She is an owner of Once Upon a Time, a bookstore
for children in New Rochelle, New York. Natalie Bober lives with her
husband in Westchester, New York, where their children and grandchildren visit frequently.

VERA ROSENBERRY loved to draw when she was a child. She hoped to be an artist and later studied
painting. When her own first child was little, the pictures in
children's books appealed to her so much that she turned to book illustration as a better way to
reach children. Since then she has illustrated many children's books,
including Anne Frank: Life in Hiding and Esther (The Jewish Publication Society). Her newest
books are Together and Magic Slippers. When she is not at her art table,
she gardens, bicycles, or just enjoys the outdoors. She lives on Long Island, New York, with her
husband and two children.
