The other day somebody left a notice on our door saying that <some
charitable organization> was going to be in my neighborhood in a few
weeks and if I wanted to have my curb street number repainted a $16
contribution was in order; if in addition I wanted a red/white/blue
flag added, that would be another $16. If I wanted nothing I was to
stick the notice to my curb with duct tape.

A few years ago they repainted everybody's number and then begged for a
contribution. I told them thanks but no thanks, when I want it painted
I'll paint it myself. Perhaps that's why they ask first now.

WTF? I would think that this was a city function, not a charity
fund-raiser.

And if the city REALLY wants to do something useful, require that every
business paint its number on its front door in numerals at least a foot
high. It's truly dangerous trying to find a business by address when
all you can see are names, especially when the names are small and
discreet.

That's how they do it where I live. You might want to put quotes around
"charitable" because it's likely _not_ a charitable organization.

Who cares? My number is already on my house and I have it memorized.
Anybody who can't figure out the system should stay the hell away
anyway. I once saw a crippled guy (think Porgy -- no legs and a little
wheeled dolly) doing it somewhere. If the city wants it done, let it
hire him.
