You're missing a fundamental part of human society. Image,
perception, illusion, and belief matter, not substance.
The nobel 'peace prize' was just given to a man who in reality has
continued and expanded war.

Because there are places to put their dogshit without having to carry
it all around the neighborhood or leave it in your driveway?
(But seriously, I agree with Brent, even the Nobel prize comment.)
I know I drive to walk on the boardwalk (Carlsbad seawall) because
there are girls in bikinis there. I could walk in my neighborhood,
indeed it would be a better workout due to the terrain, but the social
aspects (that is, having people about in a pleasing environment, not
necessarily interacting with them) make it worthwhile to commute. Of
course, I don't drive a Prius, so I can't be smug anyways.

Likely won't have to happen for several years, but eventually it will have
to happen.
Those specialized NiMH type batteries have to be recycled/discarded
somewhere. In California, even NiMH batteries are considered to be universal
waste, and so they cannot simply be dumped in the trash.

Or when one of those batteries ruptures in a collision and spills
whatever is in them into the environment...

"This item demonstrates how stupid the average American is. Every
ninety minutes someone in this country is hit by a train. A train,
okay? Trains are on tracks; they can't come and get you. They
can't surprise you when you step off a curb. You have to go to them.
Got that?"

I think it's that most of them are middle and upper middle class and
can use the tax deduction. Combine that with the good gas mileage to
save some money and they may well come out ahead of things compared to
if they bought a non-hybrid. And they get to feel good about
themselves. Also I think most of the people who buy them are the kind
of people who rarely keep a car more then 5 years or 80,000 miles so
they really aren't worried about what's going to happen when that
expensive battery goes bad. I'm still holding out for an inexpensive
version of the Volt.

Not necessarily. A properly designed primarily electric vehicle would
be a lot simpler then a petrol powered vehicle. Eventually you'd be
able to get rid of just about the entire drive train.
LOL. War is peace. Freedom is slavery.
The metals in the batteries (nickel and rare earths) are valuable
enough that no salvage yard will forego the opportunity to sell them
to a recycler if they are no longer usable as batteries.

I like to scoot by in the Si while pointing to the LEV sticker. That always
makes them fume (pun intended).
