Here's another way of generating ePub for the journal, directly in a WordPress plugin.

Subject: Wordpress ePub Plugin released
To: beyond-...@googlegroups.com

As for many others, the Beyond the PDF workshop has been a great motivation for me to do something that improves scholarly communication. I like tools that make this easier, and that is why I released an ePub plugin for Wordpress today. It is available as “ePub Export” in the Wordpress Plugin dirctory. If you have access to a Wordpress blog, the plugin makes it very easy to create ePub files  - they are created in the background when you save a blog post. For now the plugin only stores the text and images, but the next version should allow embedding of all kinds of files, most importantly data. More info here: http://blogs.plos.org/mfenner/2011/02/01/epub-wordpress-plugin-released-today/

Kind regards,

Martin

Alas, I installed this plug-in on my host and it did not work for me. Bummer, because I think epub is the way to go. If somebody else has some success, then I'd like to hear from them.

Worked for me. You have to remember to do steps 4 & 5 after you activate the plugin.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/epub-export/installation/

Important Caveat: Posts don't generate epub until you publish or update them, so every article in the Journal would have to be updated manually (still a doable proposition).

The only thing I don't like about this plugin is that it leaves off the title of the blog post. Also, the default style is pretty generic. It would be good to make the epub stylistically more similar to the journal itself -- e.g., inclusion of the journal logo, issue number, article number and/or URL, author byline, etc.

If we're talking about this for the Journal, we'd need to tweak it some.

Note: Drafts don't generate epub -- they posts have to be published or updated.

Tom,

I’ve just updated the “ePub Export” plugin to version 1.0.2. If there is a file called “epub.css” in your theme folder, the ePub is generated with that CSS file. This should make it possible to style the ePub any way you want. A future version might include an option to generate ePubs from all published posts/pages, but this will put a heavy load on the server (depending on the number of posts).

I’m open to all suggestions, as long as the plugin remains simple to use. I’m mainly interested in OPDS support for the next version, this will create a catalog of all ePubs accessible from eReaders such as Stanza.

Kind regards,

Martin

Good to know about the stylesheet option. I haven't looked at the code for the plugin; merely verified it did work. Also, I am using v. 1.0.1 from the Wordpress site,
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/epub-export/installation/

Where can I get 1.0.2?

When I have the new version, I'll look at it in more detail over the next few days and see if I have any suggestions.

Tom,

I’ve literally just done the 1.0.2 update, it should appear in the Wordpress Plugins directory  within the next hour. Suggestions are appreciated.

Kind regards,

Martin
