I've been considering setting up a collaborative workspace for programmers for a while. A few things I'm sure I need (feel free to correct me) are:
  • Solid internet connection.
  • Comfortable desks/chairs/tables
  • Conference/training room (Good for user group meetings)
  • Great environment
A few things I'm considering that would be nice are:
  • Snacks
  • A music streaming library (available through iTunes or Windows Media Player via a network share)
  • A few machines people can use if they don't bring their own
  • Server hosting
  • A small recording studio for podcasts and videos
  • Brown bag lunches once or twice a month with local business leaders and professionals
  • Startup incubator (pipe dream, but there you go.)
  • A few private offices for people who want them.
  • Training courses
  • Job board/recruitment center (primarily for freelance or independent guys to find work)
I'm a little hesitant to set prices since I don't know what it will cost to lease the space, etc.

Here's what I want to know.
  1. Are you interested in something like this?
  2. Where would you need it to be to use it? Salt Lake County, Lehi/Point of the Mountain, or Provo/Orem? (You can choose more than one.)
  3. What would you pay monthly for the following?
    1. An open desk to put your laptop and 24 hour access.
    2. A dedicated desk in an open/public space.
    3. A dedicated office with a locking door.
  4. Which of the things in the "nice to have" list would be major selling points for you?
I've created a survey to save the list from a ton of replies. Please let me know what your thoughts are!

Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,

Interesting you bring that up, I'm actually running a co-working space much like what you describe called the Provo Startup Dojo. I've been running it for 9+ months now and we have outgrown our current space (we're renting the lobby and a closet already) so we're moving to a bigger/nicer space on university ave and center in Provo (painting this week) March 1st. We should still have 3-4 desks available.

The Provo City Biz Development Committee and Groventia seed fund have sponsored us and give great access to their resources. We're having an open house in early March, i'll post here when we're in a couple weeks for those who want to stop by and check it out.

If you want more info just shoot me an email off-list at prov...@gmail.com

Cheers,

Michael Zaro
