Sony has announced it will reformulate, redesignate and repackage it’s DVCAM line of tape stock in order to better accommodate the usage of today’s HDV shooters.  DVCAM, a standard definition format, is diminishing in usage and Sony has opted to improve the formulation and repackage the product line to better reflect the growing pool of HDV usage.

The Digital Master Series will remain available in its current form, which is already designated for HDV and includes a full size 64 minute tape but will not have the 34 minute mini tape featured in the new line.  The PDV-N series of DVCAM has been a less expensive product and will remain at a lower price point and of course, still be fully compatible with DVCAM as well as standard mini dv applications.  At this point the tape is being referred to as “DVCAM for HDV” but clearly the focus is on HDV.

The new lineup will include:

Mini Tapes:

PDVM34HD (formerly PDVM22N)
PDVM63HD (formerly PDVM40N)

Full Size Tapes:

PDV96HD (formerly PDV64N)
PDV124HD (new model)
PDV186HD (formerly PDV124N)
PDV276HD (formerly PDV-184N)

Some lengths, such as the PDVM-12N, as well as the ME series have been eliminated.  Sony has also not made an announcement on replacement head cleaners.

The new products will replace the old ones on the website as they become available.  The PDVM-63HD, one of the most popular lengths, has been available for some time.

Begging your pardon, but what does this have to do with Expression Web?
