Dr.Raghavan's reference to Patanjali

[G S S Murthy]

Dr. Raghavan in one of his essays on Ramayana refers to "Patanjali’s

citation of two Anustubh verses making a humorous reference

to a solitary monkey in the monkey army standing up and

worshipping the Sun."

I request help in knowing these 2 anushtup verses in Sanskrit.

I downloaded Text only version of Dr.Raghavan's tome as PDF download was very slow. May be I lost the Devanagari text for that reason.

How does one thank a person like Shankaraji who is willing to help all the time and everyone with his wizardry? I can only say, "May God bless you".

Does the original source of these two verses remain unidentified? As far as I know, they are not in the present day Ramayana.

Sri G S S Murthy-ji,

Prof. Raghavan is not at all saying that the story is in Ramayana. 

He is saying that the story is a story involves Ramayana motifs (the expression वानरसैन्येस्मिन् is cliching) so has influence of Ramayana on it. Patanjali quoting such a story shows that Ramayana was already so popular and influential by Patanjali's time itself. 

The story itself is a proverbial story used as a proverb to talk about the behaviour of a person which turns out to be right /good / appropriate accidentally /coincidentally without being intended by that person to be so. 

एतदप्यस्य कापेयं यदर्कमुपतिष्ठति 

is the point.

Thanks Prof.Paturiji,

It was not my intention to convey that Prof.Raghavan attributed the verses to Valmiki. I just mentioned that it is not there in Valmiki, although it could fit in well in Ramayana story. Patanjali must have quoted it from some source, I felt. The fact that Prof.Raghavan does not say anything about the source made me feel that the source was unidentified when he wrote the essay.

Regarding Shankaraji's support to BVP would this convey reasonably well, which is based on Prof.Kannan's expression?

भुवं गतं वाथ दिवं गतं वा

मुद्रापितं वा डिजिटीकृतं वा ।

न पुस्तकं शोधकलेखनं वा

भवेन्न यत् शङ्करदृष्टिगोचरम् ॥
