Dear Learned Scholars and Guruvars
Pranaam

There is a shloka in Anusmriti (In Mahabharat) as:
शमीगर्भस्य यो गर्भः तस्य गर्भस्य यो रिपुः |
रिपुगर्भस्य यो गर्भः स मे विष्णुः प्रसीदतु ||

I found an old book of PanchGeeta by Geetapress Gorakhopur in which they have mentioned above Shloka but now neither in Mahabharata nor in PanchGeeta(new editions), Geetapress had not published this Shloka.

Can anyone tell me the exact meaning of this Shloka?

Regards

;samii-garbh = fire. ripu of fire = water, garbha of water = ananta-;sayana Vi.s.nu, lying in water.

Can we not say that this refers to Lord Vishnu,, who sleeps on the Ananta, who forms the garbha (bed)  on the water, which is the enemy of the fire, which in turn is there in (i.e. generated from the friction of) the Shami wood.

We can interpret this sloka in any possible manner depending on the vaktrvaicitrya. The semantic richness of Sanskrit words leave us with a wonderful scope to explain anything in manifold ways.

Sorry for the cryptic nature of my notes. What I intended to convey has essentially been conveyed by Shri Sunil Bhattacharjya.

I expect the author of the clever riddle-like verse to exploit the associations that most readers of Sanskrit literature or most traditionally educated Hindus know. I do not expect him to go for uncommon literal/etymological (yaugika) meanings of words and high-level or sectarian-philosophical concepts.

He uses the word garbha in its most common senses 'inside' and 'what is contained inside.' What is inside the inside of a ;Samii tree is fire (that is why, ;Samii wood is preferred for the ara.nis). Water is the enemy of fire because it puts out fire. What formation exists inside that enemy (in the Milky Ocean, k.siira-saagara? Vi.s.nu.
