Hi Jeff,
iCal does not sync the free/busy attribute through Sync Services, so all events on local calendars show up as busy in BusyCal.
If you are syncing with a CalDAV server, like MobileMe or iCloud, the free/busy attribute will sync between iCal and BusyCal.
