My liquid/gel/aerosol-free toiletry kit has been working out great for
several months now. Not once have I had to fish it out of my bag to
show the TSA, and so far, almost all the products are performing very
well.
The one weakness all along has been the baking soda tooth powder.
It's just not refreshing and effective enough after a long flight
without some kind of minty zing.
I've tried combining it with a Listerine Breath Strip, which worked
OK, but those things are too damned expensive and harsh on the
environment. I also seem to run out of them at the worst times.
I've also tried grinding a pack of sugar-free mints into the baking
soda, but even several minutes of ferocious pounding with my guacamole
hammer couldn't grind those things into the powder I had hoped to
create. Too much work to walk around with little minty chips in your
teeth all day.
Last week, my hotel had a complimentary bottle of mouthwash waiting
for me, so I used it in place of the water I usually mix with my
baking soda. Worked pretty well, but man, the bitterness of the
baking soda sure does eat through anything else you mix it with.
Besides, a bottle of mouthwash won't do any good if I have to wait
until I get to my hotel room. I need cool, clean, minty freshness all
day long!
I feel like I'm starting to run out of options. Looks like I just
might have to carry gum around with me and chew it while I scrape my
choppers with horrible-tasting Arm & Hammer. Amazing how I haven't
been hauled off to a private screening room to be questioned about all
that white powder I'm trying to carry onto airplanes!

Here's what I do. I have a carry-on with 2 small outside zippered
pouches. At the checkpoint, I simply pull out my little bag, put it
with my shoes, and replace it in the pouch when it pops out the other
end. Not a problem at all, and I have my regular toothpaste, shave
cream, etc.
OK - so here's my latest problem. My wife came home with about a
dozen small bottles of aftershave from an after Christmas sale.
Problem? they're all in FOUR ounce bottles. Now I have to figure out
how to fill the 3 oz. bottles from the 4 oz. with those tiny little
holes.

That raises an interesting question. Are you permitted to carry
aboard a 4 oz bottle of liquid that's only 3/4 full? If that's the
case, then you only have to figure out what to do with 1 oz from each
bottle.

Is regular toothpaste in a plastic tube considered a liquid? Even if
so, it does get sold in tiny sample-sized tubes.
No, unfortunately you're not. I've written about this before for business travel publications so I happen to know. You have to use 3-ounce bottles. See the 3-1-1 section on the TSA website for more info.

nope. I've seen folks being forced to ditch half a tube of
toothpaste. TSA staff goes exactly by the rules.
