Listers, Need to settle this once and for all. After you load a magazine in your 1911 .45acp on the Load command, do you then grasp the rear of the slide, pull it back and then release it, to chamber a round, or do you press the slide stop down, releasing the slide to go forward, to chamber a round? Since I am in the match myself, I have never watched what others are doing.

I pull back on the slide and let the gun close naturally. The slide stop is just that, a stop. Especially in defensive pistols you should never use the slide stop for the purpose of closing the gun. So, I try to do everything the same no matter what type of pistol I shoot. One thing to learn, only one thing to remember.
On the Marvel 22 conversion unit 1, you MUST pull the slide back in order to load the pistol. It will not function otherwise. Again, one thing to learn, only one thing to remember.
Can you release the slide on most guns to lock and load, YES, but like my dad used to ask me, just because you can do something...should you? Each to their own but I will continue to follow the KISS method on this one. Stephen

You will get a lot of emoution on this…..The way I was taught while shooting on Army teams was to grasp the pistol and hold the hammer back with the thumb of the right hand ( to disengage the sear from the hammer and prevent sear wear) while releasing the slide stop with the left thumb. After the slide goes into battery , holding the weapon in the left hand place the left thumb between the hammer and the slide and regrasp the pistol with the right hand.

While I was in the army and on pistol teams I was thought to hold the pistol firmly in the shooting hand (right hand) pull the trigger and hold the hammer with the left thumb and release the slide with the left index finger. Than place the left index finger between the hammer and slide and than release the trigger to make sure the sear held. Chuck Think XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX's

Listers,
Need to settle this once and for all. After you load a magazine in your 1911 .45acp on the “Load” command, do you then grasp the rear of the slide, pull it back and then release it, to chamber a round, or do you press the slide stop down, releasing the slide to go forward, to chamber a round? Since I am in the match myself, I have never watched what others are doing.
RECENTLY I HAVE NOTICED MANY OF THE SLIDE STOP NOTCH BADLY WORN. AND THE SLIDE WOULD NOT LOCK BACK ON THE LAST SHOT. THE SLIDE STOP KEEPS SLIDEING OFF. SEEMS THE METAL ARE NOT AS HARD AS BEFORE. IN THIS TYPE OF METAL I WOULD USE THE SLING SHOT METHOD. PULLING THE SLIDE BACK AND RELEASE IT. THAT WAY IT ALSO GIVES THE SLIDE MORE POWER TO STRIP THE ROUND OFF THE MAGAZINE. JMO. ED M.
I have a Les Baer Wadcutter and a Kimber Target Match 1911. Neither can be racked by pulling the slide. Only the slide stop will release the slide.
