3. ROUND TABLE=20
=20
UNDERSTANDING ENGLISH AS A TRANSCULTURAL LANGUAGE
Convener: Prof. Allan James
University of Klagenfurt, Austria
=20
While certain recent studies on language in the context of globalization h=
ighlight and positively value the heterogeneous (sub-)cultural and linguisti=
c effects that the spread and adoption of English worldwide can produce (cf.=
Pennycook 2007 on hip-hop; Dewey 2007 on English as a lingua franca), other=
s critically analyse how language itself functions as a carrier of economic =
globalization via the use of particular preferred genres and discourses (Fai=
rclough 2006). Both approaches interpret globalization in a generally 'trans=
formationalist' framework (Held, McGrew, Goldblatt and Perraton 1999), which=
in the most general terms sees cultural globalization as "the intermingling=
of cultures and peoples as generating cultural hybrids and new global cultu=
ral networks" (Held et al. 1999: 327). Participants are invited to discuss t=
he topic from various perspectives.
