3. ROUND TABLE

UNDERSTANDING ENGLISH AS A TRANSCULTURAL LANGUAGE

Convener: Prof. Allan James

University of Klagenfurt, Austria

While certain recent studies on language in the context of globalization highlight and positively value the heterogeneous (sub-)cultural and linguistic effects that the spread and adoption of English worldwide can produce (cf. Pennycook 2007 on hip-hop; Dewey 2007 on English as a lingua franca), others critically analyse how language itself functions as a carrier of economic globalization via the use of particular preferred genres and discourses (Fairclough 2006). Both approaches interpret globalization in a generally ‘transformationalist’ framework (Held, McGrew, Goldblatt and Perraton 1999), which in the most general terms sees cultural globalization as “the intermingling of cultures and peoples as generating cultural hybrids and new global cultural networks” (Held et al. 1999: 327). Participants are invited to discuss the topic from various perspectives.
