Sierra Club Invites You To: Town Hall on Sex Education

7:00 pm
Conover Cafe at All Souls UU Church
4501 Walnut St , KCMO
Many believe that the Earth has roughly twice the population that can be sustained at a reasonable level of living on a long term basis. The U.S. birth rate for teens rose after declining by one third from 1991-2005, making 2007 a record setting year of births, greater than the baby boom. Even at the low point in 2005, the U.S. had the highest rate of teen pregnancy, births and abortions of any industrialized nation. See www.populationpress.org
Hear from a diverse panel of students, parents, educators, and medical professionals about the pressing need for REAL sex education. Participate in a community discussion to help ensure that all public schools in the bi-state metro area provide comprehensive, age-appropriate sexuality education.
Sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri. Co-sponsored by the Sierra Club Thomas Hart Benton (THB) group along with over a dozen other area organizations including All Souls UU Church, Metropolitan Coalition for Responsible Sex Education, YWCA of Greater Kansas City, ACLU of Kansas & Western Missouri, Greater Kansas City Women's Political Caucus, American Association of University Women - Kansas
City, Kansas City Young Democrats, etc.
You're also invited to join Sierra Club’s - THB Population and Consumption Committee which meets at All Souls UU Church on the third Tuesday evening of every month. Call Patty Brown at 816-737-2804 or email pbb...@sbcglobal.net
Unsustainable population growth with excessive consumption dependent on fossil fuels has raised CO2 levels so that our climate is dramatically changed. The Sierra Club recognizes that all of our environmental successes may be short lived if they do not include efforts to address global population growth. The current rate at which we consume and degrade natural resources jeopardizes the health of the planet and threatens the availability of clean water and air for generations. To slow population growth we must invest in family planning. The Sierra Club advocates for policies and comprehensive sex education programs that have research supporting their effectiveness in reducing teen pregnancy, and therefore supports the REAL (Responsible Education About Life) Act.
