Hello Ladies,

I have a single, simple question: are you going to get the shot (h1n1) or not? And are you going to give it to your babies???

hugs,
judit

Hello Judit

I have not made up my mind yet, there is so much conflicting information out there. On the one hand I heard that children should get the vaccine because their immune system is still developing so if they get it it may be more serious than in an adult. Our pediatrician on the other hand said she is cautious because the vaccine is new, so even though she recommends the "normal" flu shot for children she doesn't necessarily recommend the H1N1. She does recommend it for parents, though, so that parents don't pass it on to their children.

We won't be getting the flu shot. I've read a lot about it, and it
seems to me that the hype is just that - hype. We've never gotten the
flu in our family, so the frequency with which we have this illness is
0 so far. If we do get some kind of flu, most likely it won't be this
type, and even if we DID get this type of flu, we have a 99% chance of
recovering normally from it, from what I gather.

Hi!

My mom is a doctor in Germany. She said there is no pandemia now. It is a hype that the pharmaceutical industry started in the fall as vaccines are short.lived and need to be used up fast. So far she has had zero cases of H1N1 in her practice.

My aunt, who will be the European head of the WHO as of February, says to get the shot especially, if you travel a lot.

Both say DONT give it to the babies!

Based on the above I will not get the shot for now and just see what willhappen.

Good night!

A.

Hi all,

I've attached a brief slideshow done by a professor at the University of Toronto in Canada.  It may help with your decision making - I found it fairly unbiased and at least cut through some of the confusion I had with it.

Thank you Mara, this was very useful! I've also seen the evening talkshow "Este" yesterday on M1, and we have decided that my husband (who goes among people the most) will get the vaccination. I am still undecided about myself... And the baby (1yr) will not get vaccinated unless there's a strong recommendation for the from the WHO or the Eu disease body. Until than - we'll stick to Groby (home delivery of goods) and hope that Ukraine is far enough.

Have a nice day you all!

Best,
judit

Here's an email I got this morning that seems to contain preventive
measures, not just against the H1N1, but against all viruses... I
don't know where it originated or who wrote it (so take it with a
grain of salt), BUT it seems to offer some pretty common sense advice
to avoid getting sick.

*******
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a
global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into
contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much
of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not
showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation,
aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very
simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be
practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations
to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe.)

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine or Hydrogen
Peroxide if you
don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/
nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling
prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect
on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't
underestimate
this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day
with warm salt water, or
hydrogen peroxide. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very
good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose softly once a
day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is
very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C
(Amla and other citrus fruits).
*If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has
Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.
*Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in
the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into
the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

*******

There you have it.
