Hello,

I recently started using BubbleUPnP on Android and I am very impressed with the app. However, I am experiencing a small issue related to album cover art display.

Problem description:

  • Album cover art is not displayed correctly in the album overview.

  • Cover art is displayed correctly for individual tracks and within playlists.

  • In the album overview, only the default thumbnail is shown.

  • When I tap on an album in the overview, and then on the placeholder in the top left corner, the correct cover image is displayed, so the app seems to have access to the correct image data.

What I have tried so far:

  • Tested with different servers (I would prefer to use a UPnP/DLNA server).

  • Tried different cover file names such as folder.jpg, Folder.jpg, cover.jpg, etc.

Additional observations:
  • In desktop applications (VLC Player, Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer), the cover image of a track is correctly used as the album cover.

  • There are many similar support threads online, but most of them focus on server-side issues (e.g. folder.jpg handling).

  • Since the correct image appears once I open the album, I wanted to investigate whether this could be a client-side issue first.

Do you have any ideas or suggestions on what might be causing this behavior or how it can be resolved?

Thank you very much for your help.

What UPnP servers have you tested? I use the licensed version of MinimServer - though the free version will likely suffice for most users - which is excellent and enables track, disc and album artwork: https://minimserver.com/ug-library.html#Artwork.

The only caveat is that it doesn't handle multiple album artists; if that's a requirement then you might be best looking at AssetUPnP.

- What media server is hosting your music ?
- in BubbleUPnP, in a folder that lists albums as folders, are there thumbnails (not placeholders) displayed for these albums (left of the album title) ?

Hi, thanks for the responses,
I've tried Jellyfin (windows and linux) windows media server and now I'm trying Fritz!Media Server.

In folder list and album overview, the placeholder is shown, but as soon as I click on it, the correct image is displayed.

I've tried to make a gif with the current behaviour:

I tried Jellyfin 10.10.7 (as I understand it 10.11+ is currently broken for music) and the correct artwork was shown throughout. If it makes a difference all my artwork is stored as folder.jpg.

Does mconnect Player Lite show artwork? If it does then I guess you'll need to send some logs.

If I can find the time over the next few days, I'll give Jellyin another try.

In mConnect, the album does not display a cover, but the titles do. I also tried Hi-Fi Cast and got the same result, so maybe the issue is on the server side.

besides the folder.jpg:
Do I have to tag the cover (in the track) specially? I've read that some players generate the album cover from one of the tracks.
e.g.:

Thanks for your support!

Jellyfin is a bit of an oddity when it comes to album artwork, in that if you rip to disc folders, the external artwork needs to reside in the parent of the disc folders e.g.
AlbumArtist1/Album1/CD01/01.01.flac
AlbumArtist1/Album1/CD02/02.01.flac
AlbumArtist1/Album1/folder.jpg

Personally I'm not a fan of Jellyfin (or Emby and Plex). If you're only ever going to access it via BubbleUPnP then MinimServer is a much better, more stable and configurable option.

This issue (in an album folder, no cover image in the album header but an image shown fullscreen when tapping the placeholder graphics) can happen with the following media server behavior:

- the media server does not send (to BubbleUPnP) thumbnail image links at the album list level (that is in folders whose content is a list of albums)
- the media server send thumbnails for individual tracks of an album (which is the case if album tracks have thumbails in the Playlist tab)

In the next app update I have made a fix to address the no cover  displayed in the album header: it simply falls back to the first track cover if no cover image is available at the album level, which is exactly what happens when you tap the header cover)

So yes, that issue is on the server side, that is not setting a cover at the album level.

Thanks for the clarification.
In the meantime, I tried MinimServer and it worked! Thanks for the tip.

However, if there is a workaround/fallback in the next version, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the implementation!

The workaround only applies to the album page, you'll still be missing artwork when viewing album lists.

I've just tested Jellyfin and I've been unable to recreate your scenario. If you don't mind, could you describe your file layout for an album that doesn't display artwork in album lists but does on the Now Playing screen? From my testing, the artwork from the earliest track is used for album artwork.
