Hi All,

I've just got back from Flash on the Beach feeling all inspired, and
was lamenting the fact that there's not such a good community of Flash
bods in Bristol as there seems to be in Brighton, when lo-and-behold I
actually google it and it turns out there is one.

I've been a Flash freelancer in Bristol for the last four years or so,
but to be honest I've been festering at home a bit up until recently
when I finally got myself a desk at Spike Island. I'm currently doing
myself a new site and trying to make more of an effort to learn new
stuff and make new contacts, so it would be great to get to know a few
other local people doing similar things.

Do you lot do any kind of regular meet ups?

Cheers,
Mark.

Hey Mark,
The group has been quiet for a couple of months as people went off on their
summer holidays but we do try to make the effort of doing monthly meetings
and I'm keen to keep the momentum going. We usually have around 10-15 people
round a table with maybe one person giving a bit of a talk about a
particular subject before we start talking about general stuff. It's a nice
informal format.

The last time we all met there was much talk about M(odel)V(iew)C(ontroller)
theory in interactive content (fairly technical) but we've had talks on
Animation techniques in flash, 3d and building Flex applications.

I'm keen to start up the autumn season, if there's an appetite, and Evans &
Finch are your willing servants inasmuch as hosting the event is concerned!

I'm also happy to talk about MVC as its a subject close to my heart but you
may be bored hearing about my thoughts on programming AS3 by now =)

post Flash on Beach the Bristol bunch from BFUG we're pretty fired up about meeting up asap. I know Barnaby won Colin moock's 'Lost ActionScript 3.0 weekend' http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596801526. Maybe we could do a geek's dvd night??? ( + a few beers)

cheers

I'm still really into keeping up the momentum with BFUG - lets keep the channels open and get the next meeting up and running ;)

Sounds great to me. To be honest I'd be well up for finding out more about things like MVC etc. I come at it from the point of view of someone who started out as a designer able to code simple games, but now getting increasingly more technical as I get better with AS3. I've always worked on my own with Flash so I've kind of got stuck into my own whacky ways of doing things that aren't always the best ways of working, so I'm keen to get better at things like design patterns etc.

I could possibly think of some things I could share with people too if interested - Gaia Framework... Box2d...? At the very least be good to meet some other local people to geek out with.

You lot may have done this already, but how about just a meeting over a few beers to talk about what everyone saw / thought of FOTB?

like. Also interested in Gaia.

Welcome Mark :-)

I'd be well up for a gathering and discussion of FOTB. Probably best
to do it sooner rather than later whilst it's still all fresh in our
minds. I had such a great time at FOTB, I learnt loads, got inspired,
met a bunch of good people and had fun. I'll definitely be going back
there. I'd be really interested in hearing more about Gaia and Box2D
also.

Cheers,

Hey all,

FOTB rocked. Russell and I are doing a presentation for our office to
run through some of the cool stuff we saw etc so maybe we can do that
again for BFUG. Hooked up with quite a few of the B-Fuggers at FOTB so
I'm sure they'll be able to contribute with stuff that we've
forgotten. At least it'll serve as a good kick-off for discussion.

Let's book a day in then and do another meet-up.

Shane

PS I've tinkered with Gaia (a while back) and would be keen to hear on
that if someone was willing to talk

PPS Went to one FOTB session by an animator on her workflow and was
massively frustrated at how lame her talk was in comparison to Dave's
animation talk! BFUG ftw!

I missed a couple in the past but been keeping an eye out for movement in the group, so glad there's something going on again.
I'd also be really interested in MVC and or anything OOP in terms of flash, I'm making the move from AS2 spaghetti code to AS3, so far it's a definite improvement.

Ok, all good. 15th October it is!

6pm at our offices (with the usual spread of chocolate biscuits and coffee):

Evans & Finch
4th Floor,
Bush House,
72 Prince Street,
BS1 4QD

Ring the UWE buzzer and someone will let you in.

I'm thinking an informal catch-up about FOTB (for those less fortunate souls as ourselves who couldn't make it!). Unless someone wants to prepare something?

We can usually fit 15 people around the table comfortably, which means we have 8 spaces available.

+1's so far are:
  • George
  • Mark
  • Juan
  • Nick
  • Stefan
  • Dave
  • Me!
Maybe I'll look into sorting out eventbrite one day...

+2  Matt & Rosie

Was my first time at FotB this year.

I was at the session Shane mentioned and yes it was pretty uninspiring.  There were a couple of sessions where I wished I had read the small print a little more closely but on the whole I was well pleased with the conference.  Certainly feeling more inspired after it!

Looking forward to the 15th, feels like ages since the last meeting.

I'm really impressed with the level of interest coming back from what i'm sure was a well earned break. I thought it'd be slow to pick up again but the quick signups are a real encouragement.

Thanks once again for Chris and Dave for hosting. If we kick off with a talk by Chris about MVC, and then open to floor for FOTB discussion. I'm still pretty gutted about not being able to make it, so it's something i'm pretty keen on hearing.

See you all on the 15th

Lets have a look at numbers and see what we can do ;) - I don't like people being left out, but we do only have limited space....

There's usually a couple of people that drop out due to unforseen circumstances before the meet, so we should factor that into considerations.

I'm really interested to hear about flash on the beach as I've never been myself - bring it on! :D
