Yo

What's the best way of running my win partition in a vm on my osx
partition? Will need net access to the vm. Is this possible?

I use VMWare Fusion which seems to work pretty well. The VM has full access
to the host's network connection, CD drive, sound drivers, usb ports etc.

Does booting the bootcamp partition work out of the box? I just get an
error saying it couldn't create the virtual disk? No detail about
anything :(

For me it did just work out of the box. It was a case of launching VMWare
which then detected I had a Boot Camp partition and then it proceeded boot
as usual.

What version of Windows are you using? Ive only got XP here so maybe its a
vista/win7 issue? Im also only using VMWare Fusion 2. I know that v3.0 is
out now which I havent tried yet.

Hi James

this has been giving me major pains in the neck!!

can you tell me if you are running xp with a fat32 fs?

I've tried doing this with virtualbox too and it just screws itself.

I _think_ it might be that osx can't read/write ntfs? maybe? so i'm
now downloading the ntfs-3g drivers and going to see if that gets it
raving like it's 1989

:(

This is doing my nut in!!! Maybe it's because it's a trial version of
vmware?

HI Wayne,

Yes I'm using FAT32. By default OSX can only read NTFS paritions, however in
10.6 there is a hidden option to enable NTFS write support as well. There
is a guide on how to set it up here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=785376

Might be worth trying that rather than ntfs-3g. Apart from that I probably
cant really help much more, for me it Just Worked.

:)

no worries man, been thinking out loud.

i think the issue is a collaboration of the fact that i'm still
running the ctp windows 7, running an ntfs and also installed win7
bootcamp pre upgrade to snow leopard.

i'm going to go out and buy a full win7 license today and start over -
bit of a bummer as i'm going to need to re-install all my dev tools
which generally takes a few hours but serves me right using a ctp i
guess :)
