Since we started our company back in 2000, we've done just about all
of our hosting through Areti Internet, who were consistently
excellent, and dealt with things professionally on the odd occasion
where something went wrong.
The bad news is that Areti was bought by Alentus a few months ago, and
the service has taken a nose dive. It's harming our business and
client relationships to not have a hosting company we can really trust
to deliver.
We do have one server with RackSpace and have been very happy with
their level of service so we're thinking of migrating everything over
to them. But before we jump into bed with RackSpace thinking that the
grass is greener, is there anyone else we should be looking at? Who do
the best web apps and companies in the world host with? Who would you
go with if money were no object?
Joyent and Positive Internet sprang to mind, but are there others with
absolutely tip top credentials and reputation?

We have a number of clients running sites and SVN services on boxes
provided by them and hosted by them, and we are in the middle of
migrating some rack space to them as well.

If money is no object RackSpace are extremely good - their support is as
they claim 'fanatical'.
HTH
I have to say i'm very happy with our level of service and support
from rackspace. When i started here our hosting was split between
heart internet and rackspace. Since then we've migrated all our
hosting to rackspace and have ditched heart altogether.
Something to think about with rackspace though is they don't
officially support python modules so if that's something you need then
don't expect their support to be as fanatical if you run into
problems. I say as fanatical because they've been happy to help out
with python stuff but they don't prioritise it that highly.
Cheers

How much do they pay you?

Were money no object, I'd probably choose Rackspace (provided the
software I was running was inside what they're familiar enough to
support) - I've had several good experiences with them in the past.
It's worth remembering the difference between a fully managed service
(that rackspace provide, particularly when you approach them for a
larger service) and a metal, wires and bandwidth service, which can
sometimes be a better move if you have an excess of systems
administrator time on your staff (as the flexibility is greater).

one of the directors (and tech support guy) is my neighbour and he'll
buy me a beer if I big him up, no doubt.
seriously though, fast, reliable and cheap - but thats enough about his wife.

I thought I would revisit this thread as we are being asked similar
questions - by associates - about hosting given the purchase of Areti
by Alentus.
Where did everyone move too now that Areti appear to be off limits?
Would be interested in people thoughts - this is from a Windows
hosting perspective by the way, usually we use Positive Internet, but
they don't do the Windows thing.

So yeah... not a recommendation, I'm afraid. More taking back one I've
made several times in the past.
I tend to use NetBenefit for larger sites or dedicated servers and they've
been excellent. Support calls are always dealt with swiftly and the staff
are very knowledgeable. They're quite pricey, but it's definitely worth it
for peace of mind.
Best wishes

Not as pricey as rackspace and good people to work with.

Amazon CloudFront, the new high-performance, pay-as-you-go content delivery
service from AWS
my previous company has now a contract with Datapipe and also they
need a full hosting service. The bad thing I see about cloud computing
from Amazon is that is more "utility" computing, and there is less
opportunity of having a customized service from them.
But thanks for the link. It will be very useful for my Master research
task on Cloud Computing and Enterprises.
:P
I might send a post later on on this subject to ask for the thoughts
of the mailing list :P

I'd be interested in reading your post - we're about 2/3
cloud-computed now, application and database servers at Amazon with a
leased physical-box as backup & fail-over. 3rd-party DNS serving for
redundancy and soon an Amazon CDN too.

I will post something through the mailing list soon, to ask about what
the mailing list thinks about cloud computing in enterprises, (as soon
as I finish 2 other assignments that are more "imminent" :P)

It's amazing as long as level3 doesn't go down over the christmas period
initially for an hour a day between 5 & 6 then for a whole 13 hours on
the 28th last month, the cloud that S3 was on went poof.
