Does anyone have experience with WP eCommerce or similar plugins?

Is it even a good idea to try and do ecommerce in Wordpress?

Without actually having used a WP ecommerce plugin I'd say that I wouldn't
consider going that route. I've never seen a plugin that effectively
handles all the elements of an ecommerce store (shipping tables, tax,
payment gateways, inventory, product variations, promotions etc. etc...).
I'd run a separate specialised system alongside it personally to preempt the
likelihood of running into a headache somewhere down the line with a
plugin. For simple things something like Cubecart or Tradingeye would be
worth looking at. A step up from those would be Magento.

My 2p.

I've not used the WP one listed, have used ubercart which is good if
you need the community functions of drupal too but if you just want
store then there's a few to try. Some also might be up and running on
http://opensourcecms.com to try out.

Stuff I've read says that the WP eCommerce plugin might not be the most
secure thing in the world.

Personally, I'd avoid it and go with something like CubeCart, ZenCart or the
like.

I would also say avoid the likes of Zencart and osCommerce like the plague.
Out of interest; what's your reason for citing Cubecart? I think it serves
a role in the category of "cheap/free, simple, quick to implement & easy to
work with."

The WP ecommerce plugin has very limited ecommerce functionality.

I use Zencart and have to carefully hack it to make changes. Architecturally
it's a fairly typical old-style PHP messy application which I'm quite
comfortable with hacking!

Zencart is widely supported, is mature and has a LOT of functionality. I
cannot find a better open-source alternative to switch to (I wish I
could)....

I've been testing alternatives for ages - the two best are:

1) Magento which is great but runs very very slow without an expensive
server.
2) Prestashop which looks great but is in beta (by this i mean proper beta -
not the google style of beta which is essentially a finished product!).

cheers,
Andy

It also depends on what you want to do - perhaps Danny can elaborate a
little on this...

For example, if you want content management, community, and commerce
tools then you use something like Drupal with various modules
including Ubercart. If you simply want an online shop then one of the
ones mentioned already would probably suffice.

Or you could use one of the many hosted solutions such as
http://www.shopify.com/ which I've heard good words about.

The potential client already has some of their content in Wordpress,
we're considering whether to move it all into a full CMS. We probably
won't.

Shopify isn't a bad idea though.

Similar to the Shopify route is Big Cartel <http://bigcartel.com>.

+1 for bigcartel
although there's several bit's missing that you would expect,
shopify.com i suspect is slightly more feature rich
