Hi all,

I need to draw up some fairly standard contracts that will be repeatedly used (for training and client work) and wondered if anyone can recommend a solicitor they've used (and works well).

Cheers,

- Remy

Freelancers out there with cars:

When you is freelance and sometimes driving around for work purposes in
your family car, can you claim any part of the cost of the car (and its
upkeep) against your earnings in your self assessment ?

forget petrol, I know thats allowable

I mean the cost of purchasing the car and keeping it running over the year

help pls

Hi Joe,

You'll need to check but I think the allowable mileage rate before incurring benefit in kind tax is 45ppm for a car with up to a 2Ltr engine.
Part of the amount is fuel and the other is wear and tear. Again check HMRC website but I think it is about 1/3 to 2/3.

Some one else will probably know more.

the simplest way is to claim mileage (45p per mile as I recall? - check the
rules!). THis includes fuel. You can only claim for travel "necessary for
work", not to and from your "normal" place of work either.

Otherwise, you'll be involve in capital cost of the car, depreciation,
resale and any possible tax/VAT issues.

I once had a VAT inspection and she was more proctologist than accountant.
Not good.
best to check, but it's on the gov website.

As others have said, you've got two options.

1) Claim mileage at the end of the tax year at rate set by government, no
receipts of proof of journey needed, but needs to be reasonable i.e. not
20,000 miles

2) Claim back VAT from your petrol receipts, and you'll need to keep clear
records for possible inspection.

Option 1 is best I think

Whilst mileage is definitely the more precise route, if you haven't got
records of mileage
then you could consider this way, when I had the services of an accountant
he simply asked

- how much does your car cost to run per year (i.e. insurance, mot,
servicing, fuel)? and
- what percentage of the car's use is for work purposes?

well, including Fuel and insurance, I guess it costs about 2500 a year
to run

fuel is about 1200, I estimate

% for work? I'd say 10%

I'm on middle street and have zero bars but that's fairly typical so it's
hard to tell if something's wrong.
