Funny enough I used to play every Sunday with my dad, but since we no longer live under the same roof I've not played since. I wouldn't mind playing but would need to brush up on the rules again.

I've not played poker for years - I used to play in one of those pub leagues years ago, and the pub at the end of my street runs poker nights, but they're on a Thursday. So I figured that before I go getting involved in the murky world of home games, casinos and playing for money I can't afford to lose, I'd ask here if anyone else plays, and fancies a game sometime?

I'll get some pizzas in - we can play for who gets the biscuits ;-) Texas Hold'em of course - anyone else? We can get a game going with three, but six or more makes for a much better night! Any casual players - or maybe anyone who wants to learn? We could have a teaching/refresher session for the first half-hour or so before upping the stakes and playing for Hob Nobs? If you take the money out of it, poker can be a really social game. I've a set of chips here we can play with, so no-one has to worry about losing their bus fare home!

I'm up for playing for bobbins. Seven card stud's my game of choice, though, so someone will have to give me a refresher on Texas hold 'em.

I'd be up for trying to work out probabilities of certain hands being available based on the upturned cards in Texas Hold'Em. You can quite easily rule out (eg) that flushes & straights are not possible (or highly unlikely) pretty quickly, for example.

Sounds good, I would be up for that too, although understanding the stats underlying the game would probably just replace my poker face with one of perplexity!

Practical maths poker quickie (oo-er) It's quick and easy and surprisingly works well:
After the flop, look at your "outs" - ie which cards you need to make your hand. You're holding 8,9 suited (clubs). The flop shows 7C, 10D, AC
Your total outs to make your hand are - any 6 OR jack to make a straight. There are 4 sixes in the pack and four jacks, so you've eight outs. Plus any club will make a flush - there are 13 in the pack, and you can see the two in your hand and two on the board - there are nine more clubs out there. That should be 17 possible cards, but don't forget that you've allowed for the 6C and JC in your first eight outs.
You need any one of 15 cards to turn over to make your hand. (whether or not it'll be good enough to beat everyone else is another decision - we're working on probabilities here!)
As a quick-and-dirty way of calculating your percentage chance of hitting your hand - if you're on the turn card, multiply the outs by 4. if it's the river card, multiply by 2.
So in this case, you've 15 possible outs, after the flop (ie on the turn) so you've a massive 4x15=60% of hitting a card to make your hard. (if it was on the river, the turn card being a useless KH, you'd have a 2x15=30% chance of hitting a card).
This is because we've rounded the number of cards in a deck down to 50 instead of 52. So if you've two cards to come, and 15 outs, you've a 15/50 chance of hitting it the first time, and a 15/49 chance of hitting it the second. On the river, with only one card to come, 15/50 = 30/100 = 30%. Like I said, it's quick and dirty - it uses lots of rounding off and doesn't really account for success on both turns of two cards, but as a guidline, it works pretty well in real play.
Now you know the likelihood of success, how much should you bet? Simply put, if the ratio between how much you need to bet and how much you could win is greater than the percentage chance of winning, you've got a *value bet*. (if you need to put in 10% of the pot to play to win, but your odds of hitting your card are 30%, you've got a value bet - if you made this bet every single time, you may only win one in ten, but when you do, you'd win three times more than "average").
The great thing about poker is that you learn to adapt your play to match your opponents - it's the ultimate level playing field. Someone who doesn't understand how percentages work will under and over bet all the time and can be a very dangerous player because you never know if they're bluffing, or just don't know what they're doing. Likewise, if you're playing on a table of really good players, everyone understands what each bet represents, and double-bluffing becomes the order of the day!
Hope I haven't given too much away (and no-one uses this against me to find out whether I'm bluffing or not!)
> I'd be up for trying to work out probabilities of certain hands being available based on the upturned cards in Texas Hold'Em. You can quite easily rule out (eg) that flushes& straights are not possible (or highly unlikely) pretty quickly, for example.
When I was a high-school teacher, I designed and taught a week long project/course called " Mathematical Aspects of Poker; Statistics, Game Theory, Decision Analysis, and Poker as a Test Bed for Machine Intelligence", which was pretty much just a cover for playing poker all week with students (who were all much better than me). But we did use some old poker modeling software to study hands and look at pot-odds and such. Also there was a paper on that machine intelligence bit that we read.
I'm not good at poker, but it is fascinating and I love playing (especially with low stakes and friendly people).

This is great - plenty of interest now we've got the nasty money side of things out of the way. No-limit Texas Hold'em, 1,500 chip stack and the winner takes a packet of biscuits (or maybe the first out goes to get the biscuits for the rest?)
Of course, poker can be about odds, statistics and all that, but it's much more about people. I think that's why it's such a great game - the more you know about the people you're playing with, and the personalities involved, the more you get out of the game! It's quite possible that the least two important cards on the table are the ones in front of you - what matters is what you make other players *think you have* - and no amount of maths theory can help you there!
When would be a good day? Is there anything on at the space this Wednesday? Or maybe tomorrow (Tues) if it's not too soon. Who could make it?

Well, it's hardly private. The space is being used for an over-run of a board game night game (Game Of Thrones). I'd say it would be a good fit to have a game of poker going on as well.

What I meant by semi-private is that we are finishing off a board game which we had already started. So there will be people down, but I imagine the ones playing the board game would want to finish that before playing any Poker... I personally think though from how long the board game takes, I personally would most likely be heading home afterwards.

What about we do a session on Wednesday? The first hour or so ('til say 8pm, 9pm?) can be refresher rules, get new players up to speed and older, rusty players (like me) back into the swing of it. Then when the others have finished playing their board game, we can start the 'main event" at 8.30-9pm (depending on how long their game goes on) I could deal on the "learners table" for the first game so anyone who has always fancied trying it can come along and join in without feeling intimidated. You can be shown how the game is played, order of play, how betting and chips are used, and I'll get some "hand ranking" sheets printed out for anyone who needs help telling their two pair from their royal flush! (I find teaching other people helps re-inforce my own learning too so it'd be helpful for me to get familiar with the rules, game play and so on again!)
How does that sound? Beginners table 7pm-8.30pm (with a play-game to get into it) Main event 9pm(ish) onwards

Sound good in principle, though whether or not the GoT-ers can join in
depends on how long it takes us to finish. We're theoretically about
halfway through, and it took us three hours of play to get there! Hence
finishing it as an extra session and not at the board game night, where
people might want to do other things too...

Also an FYI the GoT players are Mike, Naomi, Matt, Emma, myself and two others (apologies, I keep forgetting your names as I don't see you on the other nights...) - so the above would be stuck with GoT on Wednesday...
