Hi all, back in February (!) I put up a card sorting exercise to determine
whether the current information on the Build Brighton website is organised
in an intuitive way and where new content might fit into the site. I've
attached the results of this below, and there are some changes I'd like to
propose:
1. Changing the content on the homepage: currently the news feed is mostly
made of up content from members' blogs, which can be moved to a separate
"Blog" page (kind of like the "Planet
Nottinghack"<http://planet.nottinghack.org.uk/>area on the Nottinghack
website). The homepage can instead have key
information about the hackspace, upcoming events and workshops, latest
hackspace news, contact information and details on how to find us.
2. Rearranging the events page: we have a few different kinds of events at
the hackspace (ticketed workshops, meetups, Thursday open evenings) as well
as the Maker Faire, so instead of trying to fit all of this on one page the
current "Events" page could have some more info about these with the
calendar moved to a separate "Calendar" page listing all events happening
at the hackspace. There could also be a "Past Events" page where write-ups
and coverage of events and workshops can go.
3. Add a separate "Equipment" page: we've got a lot of new kit so I think
it would be worth having a dedicated equipment page under the "About" page
with more info about key pieces of equipment and how training works (with
info on costs for the laser cutter and lathe, etc)
4. Add a "Projects" page with write-ups of group projects and individual
members' projects
5. Add an induction / new members page with info for new members, like
links to useful pages on the Wiki, information on what to do next, how to
sign up to the Google Group etc. Not sure whether this should go under the
"About" page or the "Become a Member" page...
6. Add a "Shop" page with links to Build Brighton's online stores on Etsy
and Sweatshirt. Not entirely sure how this would work yet, but it would
help to get us a bit of extra cash
7. Add a Donate button to the sidebar and some donation info to the "Become
a Member" page: Could bring in some money from people who want to support
the hackspace but don't want to become members. Could maybe offer little
laser-cut keyrings or something to people who donate?
8. Change the Wiki format: this isn't based on anything in the card sorting
exercise and is an entirely personal thing, but I think it would be worth
adopting the Wiki format used by most of the other hackspaces. I think it
looks cleaner and the Wikipedia-style format will be more familiar to
users. (Also, the content on the Wiki needs a good clean-up!)
I'd also like to tidy up the Community page on the Wiki and get some more
entries on there, ideally with photos so we can point new members there as
a way of getting to know other members of the group. The London
Hackspace Members
page <http://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/Members> works really well
for this.
Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated! I've got some time
off in a couple of weeks so won't go ahead and make any changes until then.
Also, these are purely changes to the content and organisation of info on
the site, not the design of it.

Totally agree with this. Possibly not events though, unless we automate it -- I'd hate to see past events there.

Making it easy to do a write up of an event would be great. I'm always in awe of what Paul does for the Farm meets, where each week is summarised. With a bit of discipline and an easy way of recording it (eg sending a Markdown email, for example), we could have some good google-woo and a useful resource.

I'm happy to run with this. I'd like to get it out of the wiki and into a good Wordpress structure.
> 4. Add a "Projects" page with write-ups of group projects and individual members' projects
We've tried this in the wiki, and tbh it gets a bit outdated. Needs someone acting as an editor/reviewer or something maybe?
> 5. Add an induction / new members page with info for new members, like links to useful pages on the Wiki, information on what to do next, how to sign up to the Google Group etc. Not sure whether this should go under the "About" page or the "Become a Member" page...
Yes yes yes.
Simple page would suffice, but shortly afterwards we should also have a Members area where people can supply (eg) their emergency contact details, see the webcam output, Toby and I are working on it, promise. Help appreciated.
> 6. Add a "Shop" page with links to Build Brighton's online stores on Etsy and Sweatshirt. Not entirely sure how this would work yet, but it would help to get us a bit of extra cash
Mebbe, plus links to the component library too.
> 7. Add a Donate button to the sidebar and some donation info to the "Become a Member" page: Could bring in some money from people who want to support the hackspace but don't want to become members. Could maybe offer little laser-cut keyrings or something to people who donate?
Not sure about this. Possibly, but not on the side bar. I'd prefer we encourage sign-ups rather than one-off donations, having both could get confusing.

My opinion is that we export the Mediawiki into a bunch of text files, ditch all the cruft, and piff the remainder into Github. I think having an easy clone of our wiki will enable better management. Mediawiki always tends towards garbage unless it's well maintained, yet maintaining it is a pain in the ass.
> I'd also like to tidy up the Community page on the Wiki and get some more entries on there, ideally with photos so we can point new members there as a way of getting to know other members of the group. The London Hackspace Members page works really well for this.
Best of luck ;) -- but i do think this is a good idea. One of the real stumblers when showing new members the space is that they really often only know the person that's showing them around or has spoken with them via email. If they can read a (hopefully up-to-date) mini post of a few other members, this may encourage them to socialise a bit more on the evening.
> Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated! I've got some time off in a couple of weeks so won't go ahead and make any changes until then. Also, these are purely changes to the content and organisation of info on the site, not the design of it.
This is all gold Em, thanksl loads. Agree that we shouldn't consider the design of the general site in this, I think it's fine, and would lead towards unnecessary bikeshedding.
To be fair there are two Chris members. As for photos, not a bad idea
however should be optional as I personally do not appreciate having my
picture taken nor shared.

I agree with Justin, having full face photos taken and placed on web page is something of a personal choice.
Rob, If you browse the internet, posts on this groups and the member's group, Google +, Build Brighton web site and twitter, FB you will see logo's which are placed next to their real names. So you could use this to identify members of Build Brighton by putting names to logo's then arrive on a Thursday and ask around persons present and over a short period of time you can put names to faces rather than logos.
I was able to build a G+ Build Brighton circle just by using the search/logo method. I'm one of the Chris's and my logo is a wee me and I'm working on a RC Car conversion, also use the name Oric Tosh in posts on the internet. From that information you should be able to find a photo and get some idea of what I look like and do in IRL.
I don't think we have met but you currently you have a dragon as your logo so I could search/ask at the space/internet to enable me to put a face to that name/logo. Also the best method is just turn up regularly on Thursday night and you will soon get to know faces and names, as I feel the above method can be seen as unfriendly but it's just the way the internet/computers are these days.
I think building up the members page on Build Brighton, with links to blogs etc using the above method should enable new members to meet up with other members and get help with their project.

I understand why you guys might not want your pictures taken, but please do
not be offended if it takes me several months to figure out the exact
combination of avatar, twitter ID, real name and actual face that make up
the person that is you. :-)

I dont want a photo on the web ect either but would a rogues gallery at the
space be ok, and maybe the simplest and most friendly solution?

Who's done any work with digital camera interfacing?
I've a few we could pull apart to use in a "stand-here-take-a-photo-and-print-out-an-ascii-art" type installation.
That would not only give us a cool group project to get going with, but provides an easy way to build a "Face at the Space" board - and we get to hack old clunky hardware to make it all work - a little receipt printer or something would be ace!

Sounds like a great idea (we could have a caricature competition to fill the gaps :-)
However, right now I don’t think we even have a list of members available for the benefit of other members. The “community” page on the web site wiki only has 11 people on it. I think a start would be a list of members (together with online aliases, how to get in touch via twitter/IRC/email etc) and key interests/skills, and we could even add photos of the willing.
Not sure if this could (or should) be made “private” for other members only

If that was so, I would still submit my avatar as my photo for that wall, even if I'm picked to be on that wall. Maybe the Directors could be on that wall as they are key members of Build Brighton.
Just use the *ask* method if you see someone you don't know, just ask them "Do I know You?", "How are you connected to Build Brighton?" I used this method once while in the space working on my own within the space on a weekend to find out about a person who came in to make coffee from downstairs.
I have noticed the other posts about a "face in space" wall which sounds like a good project. On the theme of a group project we still need a Huge Lit up LED Sign saying "Entrance to Build Brighton is round the back of this building"

Lots of great suggestions here. To be honest I was just thinking about
initially getting more entries on the Community page for now, but a few
people have raised some really good points:
1. Should this be private (for members only) - maybe this is dependent on
what content people want to add?
2. Can we have a full list of members to distribute to the group
3. Should there be a physical equivalent in the hackspace (a "rogues
gallery")
Jason, I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick about the list of
members you suggested, let me know if that's the case.
The good thing about the community page on the Wiki at the moment is that
the content is all user-generated: people create their own Wiki page and
add as much or as little content as they like. As a lot of people have
stressed here, the issue of putting personal information (particularly
photos) online is a delicate one, and should only ever be completely
optional.
To make this easier, maybe there is a way under point 1 to have different
levels of access on the Wiki? Eg for members of the public information like
"name", "key skills" etc is visible, but information like "photo", "further
information" is only visible after a member logs in? (This is purely an
idea as I don't know anything about the functionality of the Wiki.) Or, as
Seb mentioned, maybe a Facebook-type application that allows different
levels of privacy. Any thoughts on this or how it could be implemented?
Regarding point 2, I don't think we should distribute a list of members
without getting permission first - I think this should be an opt-in process.
Same for point 3: I really like the idea of having a physical gallery in
the hackspace, but again people would need to agree to be included in this
and specify whether they want to include their photo or not.
Em
(sorry there's only one of me :( )

It's a reasonable idea, but doesn't scale particularly well. Imagine a wall of 100 people's photos and details. It'll get crazy.
I do think it's a good idea to have photos and details of a few people, particularly those that look after areas of the hackspace - so members know who to talk to about things such as:
Or imagine a wall of passport size piccys of a hundred members, it would be
fan flipping tastic, we'd have a hundred members! :-)

There's a surplus of the grey pin-boards from the display stands that I bought for BMMF. I'll mount those on the wall behind the sofas, and everyone who wants to can pin up their mugshot and some details about themselves.
I'd have thought an A6 picture and A6 text should be enough. Here's mine!:

Em, I missed that you were already talking about the community page on the wiki – an up to date one would do fine
When I first found BB on the internet a year or so ago and wondered what it was about, I was looking through the web site and thought there were only 9 members! I was genuinely surprised to find so many people down the Skiff the first time I went along... I think projecting the image of the large and vibrant community we actually have really does help encourage people to check it out!
I know not everyone wants their real name shown – a nickname or firstname would be fine

Lots of great suggestions here. To be honest I was just thinking about initially getting more entries on the Community page for now, but a few people have raised some really good points:
1. Should this be private (for members only) - maybe this is dependent on what content people want to add?
2. Can we have a full list of members to distribute to the group
3. Should there be a physical equivalent in the hackspace (a "rogues gallery")
Jason, I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick about the list of members you suggested, let me know if that's the case.
The good thing about the community page on the Wiki at the moment is that the content is all user-generated: people create their own Wiki page and add as much or as little content as they like. As a lot of people have stressed here, the issue of putting personal information (particularly photos) online is a delicate one, and should only ever be completely optional.
To make this easier, maybe there is a way under point 1 to have different levels of access on the Wiki? Eg for members of the public information like "name", "key skills" etc is visible, but information like "photo", "further information" is only visible after a member logs in? (This is purely an idea as I don't know anything about the functionality of the Wiki.) Or, as Seb mentioned, maybe a Facebook-type application that allows different levels of privacy. Any thoughts on this or how it could be implemented?
Regarding point 2, I don't think we should distribute a list of members without getting permission first - I think this should be an opt-in process.
Same for point 3: I really like the idea of having a physical gallery in the hackspace, but again people would need to agree to be included in this and specify whether they want to include their photo or not.
Em
(sorry there's only one of me :( )

Hi Mike (the other one) not sure we have met,
If that was so, I would still submit my avatar as my photo for that wall, even if I'm picked to be on that wall.

That's a really good point. It's hard to think of the (main, brochureware) website from the perspective of someone that knows basically buggerall about us, but that's how it should be designed.
another point, crass as it may sound – i think it helps to see we have a good gender mix, so that that prospective female members are not put off by assuming we’re a bunch of sweaty old nerdy blokes (or at least not everyone is, even if i am)

Quick point regarding the data from the card sort: I weighted categories
according to usefulness for different groups of people, eg things like "how
to find us", "how to become a member" etc are most useful for non-members.
I think I weighted "information about members" as being most important to
non-members and members who visit the space on an irregular basis (as
members who're down there all the time will know most people already!).
Of course, this only defines *where* the information goes on the site, not
what the information should be...
